Something just popped into my mind that I had not thought about for many years - the Spiffy shirt collar stay from my NROTC days at Ohio State. We had to wear them under our uniform black ties. It was a wire and spring contraption with sharp prongs that forced the pointed shirt collar tips flat against the shirt. We had to wear them, part of the uniform inspection routine. I suppose they are no longer made, at least I have not seen or heard of one for many years. I had at least a half dozen of them, as I remember they cost 15 cents, and were easy to lose.

Army used them, too. Think they were officially called collar stays. At one time, I even kept a tie with a spiffy tied inside the knot and just loosened it enough to slip over my head and hang on a hook until the next day.

Did they look like this?

I recall white plastic collar stays that you slipped into little pockets in the collars of dress shirts for non button down collared shirts, but don't recall the "spiffy." Maybe it was just a military uniform thing. (I did not serve.)
I suspect the slip-in plastic collar stays replaced the Spiffy. It has been a lot of years since I had to worry about dress shirts and collar stays. Back when I needed to wear suits, ties and dress shirts daily, I preferred button-down collars.

Think they went out the same way the "P38" (can opener) needed for sea rats. Oh, and my three Lucky Strikes cigarettes in a pack. Yep ole Navy retired dog here.

I have some of those collar stays made of brass, or a least brass colored metal of some sort.

I don't have a Spiffy, but I still carry a P38 in my wallet. I have actually needed to use it a few times.
