I just saw on the news that the last K-Mart store operating in the US (located on Long Island) is closing in October. I was thinking they had all closed some years ago, after the disastrous merger of Sears and K-Mart. When I lived in Fort Worth, I always bought .22 ammunition at K-Mart, as it was usually on sale there.

Growing up in a lower-middle class family down near New Orleans, most of my clothes as a kid came from K-Mart.

I'll also never forget after Hurricane Katrina, my family business was looted and they stole all our delivery trucks... A few months after the storm we found many of the trucks abandoned around the city and almost all of them were full of stolen merchandise from K-Mart! You'd think those people would have been stealing food and water, but nope... They also had to ditch the trucks after they put regular gasoline in the diesel engines. Wild times in New Orleans after Katrina. Wild, wild times.

When I was a kid, K-Mart was everywhere. My little sister worked at one as her first job. I remember asking her how it was there, and she jokingly said OK, but it was everyone's dream to move up to a Walmart. Today she manages a Walmart in Idaho...lol

Like to learn why and how they faded away. 45 years ago, a good source for inexpensive but durable merchandise, I still have some of my Texas Steer boots. When the one nearest me closed out its gun department I got some good bargains.

I still got one of two knifes I bought at K Mart on a blue light special. they were serrated blade kitchen knifes and. one got caught in a drawer and broke but the other I use about every day. Must have been 30 or 40 years ago.

I came across a couple of 5-Packs of Winchester buckshot with a price tag from Woolco in an old go-bag recently. For those under 40 that was F. W. Woolworths' attempt to imitate S.S. Kresge when they created K-Mart.

I bought a lot of ammo at K-Mart back in the day. I also lost some money on their stock after Chuck (the lying weasel) Conway misrepresented the companies liquidity.

I got carry-over deductions on my taxes. Conway had to cough-up $5.5 million to the SEC, but that didn't put a dent in his plunder. I hope he burns for eternity...

One word...Amazon.

Or, you could say internet shopping. The last Mall closing will probably also be very soon.

Several factors led to their demise. Too much debt was way up there. Competition from Walmart, which executed better. If you have too much debt any misstep can kill you.

I always liked them better than Walmart. The one I went to had a really good automotive section.

I remember the food court with the nasty hot dogs, cotton candy and Icee machines.

When I was in junior high a bunch of us were at a friend's house when the kid's dad says, "Some of the best beef I've ever had was at the K-Mart grill." We all looked at each other, like, "Is he insane?" A couple of weeks later I made the mistake of eating the mom's cooking and I understood.

As mentioned above an excellent automotive section along with landscape plants and quality garden tools reasonably priced.
Wouldn't eat their food on a dare.

Early - Mid 1970's, I remember at K-Mart you could get a Win. 94, or a Marlin 336 in 30-30, your choice, $99.00. I ran a trap line as a kid, and remember thinking, "Let's see, that's 3, maybe 4 good prime red fox, and a couple nice raccoon pelts to cover a sling, case, and ammo". Thats how I acquired my first model 336.

Today, fur is about worthless, and a new 336 costs what, about a grand?..:(
