Tonite we made some fresh caught Pink Gulf Shrimp on the BBQ wrapped in bacon. A little Sticky Rice and a few veggies and it made for a very taste dinner. Oh- made some spicy Teriyaki Sauce too. First time I've done that on a BBQ grill but it came out well.

Over the last two years I have expanded my pallet and got hooked on some food that I never realized made much of a difference. Now I can not go backwards!

I was always a Shrimp lover and usually enjoyed it. Then we went to a friend's BBQ down the street and I ate some fresh caught Pink Gulf Shrimp caught in the wild. It was so much better I asked the host exactly what it was and where she bought it. From that evening on, I can no longer eat farm raised frozen shrimp! When we get Chinese take-out or even in the restaurant, I no longer order shrimp dishes because it doesn't peak my taste buds any longer. I have been spoiled!!

If you are a shrimp lover you owe it to yourself to try some. It is a completely different experience - at least to us.

If you want to save money - do not try it! :D

BTW, they usually have it in Costco and sometimes in Whole Foods.

I used to give my cat one shrimp a week. She loved the treat, but she always left the last digit of meat at the tail end (totally pealed shrimp) . One week I gave her a shrimp, and she ate the whole thing. I thought hmmmm why did she eat the whole thing and not leave the last digit of the tail like she always did? Next week she left the tail section again. Finally I connected the dots - if the shrimp were wild caught she ate the whole thing, and it was farm raised, she left that last bit of meat in the tail. Kinda makes you wonder what it is about farm raised shrimp that the cat detected. I never bought farm raised shrimp again. True story.

I had the experience of truly fresh Gulf shrimp exactly 1 time. A friend of my late hubby had connections in the gulf, They loaded up our F350 with 3 huge coolers and headed south. Fresh off the boat, 250 pounds of shrimp were here in Iowa in about 24 hours. He called me where they were about an hour away and told me the get the biggest pot going on the grill burner, we're gonna eat shrimp! I think the 3 of us ate about 10 pounds.
Have to settle for frozen, wild caught shrimp now. No farm raised or imported from Vietnam or China!

I'm lucky enough to eat it all the time. I live an hour from the piers in Galveston. I have bought it off the boat but HEB's is fresh and it's half a mile away.

Nothing like seafood off the boat, caught that day. The women in my family used to go buy albacore off the boats and can it. Makes Chicken of the Sea look and taste like dogfood.

Some friends used to freeze some fresh gulf shrimpers and truck them the whole way up to NW Wis. It was a heaven send to area that sees precious little real seafood.

For even more flavor, cook with the shell on. For the most potent seasoning, boil down the heads. Home made Cajun seasoning on shrimp are a match made in "flavor town"

Shrimp is like lobster, fresh is best. Buying a lobster out of a polluted aquarium in San Antonio is not fresh. I always tell the wife if it smells like shrimp do not buy. Being close to the Texas coast has its advantages, just like flying to see my grandson in NH and then driving to Kittery, Maine for lobster is divine. You people are making me hungry.

I 100% agree about cooking them with their shells on, however not if BBQ
is the goal on the grill. If I have eaten imported farm raised shrimp before, it could have maybe been at a restaurant. I even like the small ones we use for fish bait caught in a cast net. Boil them with full body. Sweet. Get out the melted butter. I'll be right over.

I won't eat farm raised shrimp if I can help it. I can't get the fresh caught up here where I live but I always but Wild Caught shrimp. My favorite is the Argentine red shrimp followed up by Key West pink then the brown gulf shrimp.
