SHRIMP - I HAVE BEEN SPOILED! - updated 02/12/25

I recall the first time I had a Po'boy sandwich in Belle Chase, LA. Ordered a Shrimp Po'boy and could not get over how good it was!! I made several trips down to hunt ducks on the Delta and always met my hunting partners at Salvo's Seafood & Deli Restaurant. Only wished I could take a bunch home with me.

Nothing like seafood off the boat, caught that day...

Iguana's Seafood Restaurant is on St. Simon's Island in Georgia, about three blocks from the water. Their shrimp is fresh every day, and is just out of this world. If you're anywhere near the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, it's about 20 minutes from there... :)

I've been an ovo-pescatarian for many years.

Only eat wild caught, and cage-free range fed chicken eggs.

Have shrimp about every two weeks.

I am a convert to free range chicken and eggs as well. Lately we have even been buying blue eggs at Costco (when they have them in stock). Not only are they healthier, they taste better too.

I can vouch for this. When my son graduated from FLETC in October of 23 I went there with him and my daughter in law. The place doesn’t look like much but food and shrimp were great.

Over the last two years I have expanded my pallet and got hooked on some food that I never realized made much of a difference. Now I can not go backwards!

I was always a Shrimp lover and usually enjoyed it. Then we went to a friend's BBQ down the street and I ate some fresh caught Pink Gulf Shrimp caught in the wild. It was so much better I asked the host exactly what it was and where she bought it. From that evening on, I can no longer eat farm raised frozen shrimp! When we get Chinese take-out or even in the restaurant, I no longer order shrimp dishes because it doesn't peak my taste buds any longer. I have been spoiled!!

If you are a shrimp lover you owe it to yourself to try some. It is a completely different experience - at least to us.

If you want to save money - do not try it! :D

BTW, they usually have it in Costco and sometimes in Whole Foods.

Been buying wild, shell on shrimp at Costco for years,

I will not buy any seafood that is "farm"raised,

Way back when my father was a Chesapeake Bay and Virginia N Carolina commercial fisherman. He worked wherever he could to make a living. I remember him coming home feom working down the coast with crabs fish and shrimp when he came home. Not being much of a seafood fan I never really cared all that much but he came back with some big shrimp which my mother really loved. I only ate shtimp butterflied and fried... I also usedto tale my mother to Maine when my fater was racing his horses up in Maine during the Summer. She would love to go out for Lobster up in the Kittery area. And since I had an FFL I had to spend time in the Kittery Trading Post. Bought a bunch of guns up there....and brought many a fresh caught lobster home for her...BTW a nice jumbo shrimp or a 1/2 a soft crab makes Great fish bait...then there are oysters...gack??

My son went to FLETC in 2010 and raved about Iguana's. We went there when I visited him and when he graduated, which was my introduction to the place. Several years later, I had to go to FLETC myself for training, and ate at Iguana's at least one night each week while I was there.

In 2022, I helped my son move back up north after he'd spent several years in Florida. On the trip back home, driving up I-95, we got off the highway and detoured over to Iguana's for lunch. Yes, it's that good... :)

Somebody mention fresh caught shrimp? Unfortunately, I only have a pic of the leftovers. Joe

But who can explain "Jumbo Shrimp"?

Shrimp come in all sizes from popcorn shrimp to the extra large jumbo shrimp. Our favorite Chinese restaurant uses jumbo shrimp in it's dishes containing shrimp. Of course they are fresh from the gulf, a half dozen jumbo shrimp is almost a meal in itself.
