What are the practical problems with keeping a gun in the glove box? If I needed it I would want it fast, so I wouldn't want it in a holster, right? I could just wrap a scarf around it or something, but then I'd worry about a loaded gun sliding around it my glove compartment every time a took a corner a little too fast or had to slam on the brakes.

It would either be my 686 or Beretta 92FS. Would dust get on it and scratch it up too bad? I left an extra pair of glasses in a case in there for a while and when I needed them it looked like I had taken sandpaper to them. What about heat, cold and humidity?

What are your experiences?

excellent question. i have been wondering this myself, especially with concern about weather conditions.

In Florida, one can keep a handgun in the glove compartment without a permit (other places, too).

In my classes, I try to encourage them not to do so.

LEOs ask for one's D/L and registration and, often it seems, people keep their registration, etc. in the glove compartment.

If stopped for a traffic offense and the officer requests registration papers, reaching for them into a glove compartment where your firearm is seems slightly suicidal.

God only placed certain holes in your body and you don't want to take extra holes home.

As to damage to the gun, I suspect it would be minor, some dust, etc. I would put it on top of other flat papers, maps, etc. so it didn't bounce around. Your named firearms are big enough that they shouldn't move too much in an average sized glove compartment.

But, I wouldn't put it there myself since there are so many other options in my state-like the console.

You can beat heat, cold and humidity by wiping them down with the old, reliable silicone rag.

thanks straightshooter for the advice.

in regards to police, i know that in some states, if a LEO asks for ID you have to show him your CC permit. Indiana law is silent on the issue, but it was suggested to me by my issuing PD to provide the permit if stopped, even if the LEO doesnt ask me for it...so i dont see that as an issue so much.

Texas is the same way now from what I understand. The difference between having it there with or without a license is that with a concealed carry license you have to tell the officer if you are stopped. You don't have to without the license. Doesn't make much sense to me, but that's what I've been told by people who should know.

I thought about the problem of getting your insurance card. (I've never kept registration in there.) On a test run I took an elastic band that came from somewhere and put it on the sun visor and put my card up there. I still haven't convinced myself to keep a gun in the glove box yet, though.

In Arizona it is legal to have a loaded handgun in your center console or glove box as long as it is in a holster. If the gun is not in a holster it is considered "Concealed" and a CCW permit is required. Go figure..........

I would never leave a gun in the car.

The last thing I want to happen to me with guns is to have some Bozo steal it and go shooting up the area or someone.

The very best that would bring is for me to loose my permit forever.

No thanks, I'll take it with me.

there's bound to be other better places to secure your pistol than a glove box....

It is my opinion...and you know about opinions...that they proper way to carry a handgun is on your body in a decent holster on the belt or maybe in a pocket. You should carry it as you do when you train with it(you DO train with your gun(s) don't you?). If you need your hands free a gun in a glove box is a bad place to have it. If you need to bail out of the car what are you going to do then? Stick it in your belt? If you open the box under stress and it falls on the floor on the passenger side, what then? The glove box is for GLOVES not your gun.

Also, as a former LEO, keeping the gun in your glove box where you forget about it when you go for your paperwork on a traffic stop is a good way to get shot! That could spoil the day for both the LEO involved and you. You can get a proper holster and use a carry position that makes your gun just as easy and quick to get to as using the glove box...IMHO

FWIW, as I understand the law in Texas, you can only carry a weapon in your car without a CCW license if you are traveling. It seems that every jurisdiction has a different definition of traveling. Going to work or shopping in a different county might count in some places, but not in other places. I have no problems with it as I live in Oklahoma, so I'm pretty much assured traveling status when in Texas.

Paperwork in the glovebox, pistol in the console in a holster sitting vertically where it's easy to get to.

Sometimes you can't take your pistol with you where you're going. When you get back in the truck, loosen the belt, put the holstered gun back on, tighten the belt, and off you go.

Straight shooter is right about the Fl law. I ride with mine in the glove bow on an old oil soaje bath cloth. I do however keep the vehicle registration andf insurance clipped to the sunvisor over my head. KNever did likeopening the glove box with a rookie cop looking over my left shoulder with his hand on a Glock

When I am traveling in my vehicle I carry my weapon in a holster mounted inside my center console. It is much easier, and much quicker, to reach my weapon from there rather than to remove it from a belt holster while seated with a seatbelt on. Plus, it takes much less movement to make it visible to anyone who wants to see it, i.e.: a LEO. When I leave my vehicle then it goes in my holster. All of my vehicle paperwork is on my visor, never in the glovebox. Why is it called a glovebox anyway??!

You're correct. The problem is that I don't have a concealed carry permit, yet. I'm working on it though. In fact, the guy who will be teaching the class is the one who told me it would do to keep one in the car until then. He said that the Texas law about having to be traveling to carry one in the car had been clearified by the legislature. Now, supposedly as long as it is kept out of sight it is okay. I'm keeping all the important documents on my visor, and they are not visible with the visor up.

Once I get the license, the next problem is getting a proper concealed carry gun. The two I mentioned above are the only two handguns I have at the moment. When I do get one, I want it to be a good one, so I'm saving up. That's easier said than done with a wife and two daughters.

I wouldn't even worry about it all that much, but even in the little town I live in we are having shoot outs on the streets now. I don't have a center consol in my car, so the glove box is about all that is left. Ironically, my wife's Prius has all kind of cool places to hid a gun. Somehow I don't think the engineers designed it with that in mind.

In Ohio we are now permitted to carry a gun in a holster in a glove box with a CC permit. I just bought a Toyota FJ cruiser and added a steel lockable after market center council glove (gun box)so and attached a holster to the inside side of the box. I now have an easily accessible gun and can really lock it in the vehicle when I go into any of the many places we cannot carry concealed.

I prefer the center console to the glove box or a holster in the car. The CTS has a storage area below the arm rest part of the console for an insurance card or whatever so the gun is never exposed. And since my arm is on the rest 90% of the time, it is easy to flip open and draw if needed.

If your vehicle has a pocket in the driver's door, you will find that to be a good location. My Smith model 60 is in a cheap Nemesis holster that fits snugly enough in the door pocket, with hammer on top and muzzle pointed to the rear. My wife sewed up a heavy cloth cover for the holster, which extends over the hammer so that there is no shiny metal visible. The cover is nearly the same color as the door upholstery, so it is unlikely to attract any attention from the casual observer. All I have to do to get into action is lift the revolver/holster/cover out of the door pocket with the left hand, then reach over with my right hand to draw.

I usually carry IWB under a tucked shirt. I have easier access from the glove box than I do from the holster when I'm driving.

But only if permitted by applicable law. I believe that in Ohio, that's not permissible. Glove box or closed center console are permissible. The alternative is a holster on your body. Pocket holsters are acceptable.

A holster is PERMITTED inside the glove box or closed center console, but not REQUIRED. A holster is REQUIRED for on body carry. You can carry in a holster in your pocket, but not in your pocket without a holster. This applies only to vehicles. You can carry without a holster when on foot.
