The wife has indicated she would like to go to Yellowstone. I need some suggestions on the best way to get there. It looks like you can take I-90 to I-25 and then take state roads. It looks like I-80 is too far South. It also looks like you can take 90 further North into Montana and come down. I will be coming in from the East.

I see you are comeing from the east. I definetly would take 90 working my way to cody and the east entrance. Cody has the buffalo bill museum, a MUST see! 90 will also take you through the bad lands and black hills, go see rushmore and deadwood. After yellowstone, drop south and see the grand tetons. Going back, I would be tempted to go up 15 and see the custer battelfield, if time permits glacier NP, go back on 94 then drop down to your area. Sounds like fun!

Sounds like a wonderful vacation! And all your wife did was indicate she'd like to go to Yellowstone? That's it? And you're mapping out the route? Your wife's a lucky girl! (You got a single brother?);)

If you can try to come into Yellowstone by way of the Beartooth High Way. This is one of the most scenic roads in the USA.

Two great suggestions . . . though if you come from the south side, you'll LOVE the Grand Tetons National Park possibly better than you will Yellowstone! It surely SMELLS better!

Seriously, if you haven't been to the Grand Tetons before and have the time, I'd strongly recommend spending 2-3 days there before or after making the "rounds" in ol' Yeller!

I second the suggestion to see the Custer Battlefield (now known as the Little Bighorn Battlefield) while you're nearby. Anyone who loves and appreciates history should see it.

Take 90 to Laurel, MT and go to Red Lodge. Head up the Beartooth highway and spend some time in the Park. Exit through West Yellowstone and return to 90 through Ennis, Virginis City and north through Sheridan to Whitehall. I would not waste 20 minutes in Custer Battlefield but that is me. Check out Pompeys Pillar near Billings. Stop in Big Timber and visit the C.Sharps and Shiloh arms factories. If you have time run out the east entrance of the Park and spend a day in the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum. Don't short the time, a full day is needed. Have fun and don't eat at chain restaurants, you will see t he real people. Gianni

We just went a few weeks ago. We went in the Beartooth Highway and the East Gate. We went out through the Tetons and Jackson, WY. I fully 2nd what Tom Turner said. The Tetons are a very well-kept secret. Enjoy the trip!

Herk

PS--Forgot to add--they are currently working on the highway that connects the Tetons to Yellowstone. Expect delays going South into the Tetons.

By the way, I worked in the tetons for the NPS back in 1961. I always thought the tetons was a lot prettier than yellowstone. Jackson used to be a lot of fun too.

I prefer to enter through Cody (after a day at the BB museum) and leave through the Beartooth. I think the views are better coming down. Or come up the Beartooth and then take 296 through the Sunlight valley to Cody and enter Yellowstone that way. It got it's name because way back when, the only thing that could get into the valley was sunlight! Then leave back through the Beartooth and decide for yourself which is better -- going up or back down. Side trip throught the Tetons is great if you have the time. We did a little circle tour one day in the Tetons -- there's a gravel forest service road on the north end of the tetons that goes over to Ashton, ID, then state highways down through Teton Pass to Jackson. I don't remember how rough the forest service road would be for a car since we always travel in my Jeep Wrangler. Oh, Bubba's BBQ is another must stop in either Jackson or Cody. We went out for breakfast last time in Cody -- if you like a good breakfast. . . Wow! The Jeep has also leaned to never drive past a Sierra Trading Post without turning in. . .

That's one trip where you can't help but to have a great time!!! Have fun!

If you do decide to go see Mt. Rushmore and Deadwood make sure you drive thru Spearfish Canyon (U.S Hwy 14a)I was out there over the 4th and that was one of the most awesome/beautiful things things I've ever seen.Worth the trip all by itself.
