I have a 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun that, according to SCSW 5th, was shipped sometime between 1955 and 1959. Would the factory box pictured be period correct for this revolver or is a "sunburst" box correct?

1953 may have been the red box, with a kit gun printed lable or the sunburst box...

NOTE: I don't think that either of these guns came to me with the photographed boxes, but I believe they are accurate for the guns photographed on top. The red box is with a 1951 transitional kit gun, and the blue box is with a 1954 kit gun.

Serial number of your gun would help the guys narrow down the date for you. Probably the year shipped would make a difference in the box. A lot of difference between 1955 and 1959. Here is an early box for a .22/32 Airweight Kit Gun. The first ones shipped in November 1954. My gun 6211 shipped July 1955. The box does not number to my gun, but have been told it is the correct style.

SCSW 5th Edition says Model of 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun serial number range is 101 to 135465. I think that also includes model marked guns. That information must be incorrect if your serial number is in the 192000 range.

David,

Your info is correct...JeffD607 must have mistakenly posted an Extra (X) in the Serial Number when he made his post!! And "Yes"...The Serial Number Range you posted "Does" include the Model-Marked Post-War .22-32 Kit-Guns before the M Prefix was added in '69!!

The serial number is 192XXX, which puts it in the 1955-1959 range.
As Masterpiece noted, the serial number must be 192xx (five digits). Kit Gun number 32230 shipped in January 1958. Shipping didn't take place in serial order, but yours may have shipped in 1956 or 1957, as you suggested.

We know it can't have six digits with the first three being 192 because Kit Gun serials did not go that high. And yours still has the flat thumbpiece, which ended in 1966. I also suspect yours is not model marked, so it is a Model of 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun.

Yes, I accidentally added an extra X to the serial number.

I don't know much about the boxes or if different models used different boxes. Here is the box that my .357 Combat Magnum came in. The serial number on the box matches the gun. It shipped in August 1956. Not sure what it is called. Think I have heard it called the blue/black box. With age it just looks gray to me. Thought to show it because you think your gun might be from 1956 or 1957.
