Seems that Exaviator nailed it with warn pins. I'll look for replacements and/or more mags without warn pins. Thanks to all for the help.

The, new to me, 1979 Model 41 came with three mags. (see pic) Only the mag with the orange follower (also marked 12 for capacity and with the S&W logo) holds the slide back when empty. The two 10-round mags don't hold the slide back but appear to have the "pin" that is supposed to do that...

Looked further Found her real S/N under the grips on her square butt. "D" prefix with a date that puts it made in '74 (per Standard Catalog). So, have to wonder what the other serial numbers on the side of the butt and the crane really mean. Hmmmmm???
