The Model 15 barrel is a 4". I purchased a used model 19 barrel that is a 4" its a little rough on the exterior but has a good bore. I like the shroud on the 19 barrel. I realize the shoulder will need set back a little. This will be a carry gun so I will duracoat it. I have a model 586 3" but...
I'm thinking of having a model 19 barrel cut to 3" with a weigand sight ramp installed on a heavy barrel model 15. I'm curious how well the barrel to frame contour will match.
Ernie L,you are absolutely right. When my 586 is cut to 3" part of the stamping will also go.I'm having the sides of the barrel milled.(There is plenty of steel to do that safely).Hope it looks good that way ,should at least be interesting.
Jul,The weigand ramp is the way to go in my opinion. I have one on my 686 and my gunsmith is shortening my 586 to 3" and installing one. They take the same front sight as some smith and wessons.I beleive they are dx models.
I checked on the 586-5 today and it is indeed MIM parts.Thats actually a good thing. Now I can easily replace the bobbed hammer.I am having it turned into 3" and will post pictures when it is done.
I am reconditioning a 586-5 which has the frame mounted firing pin. I would like to replace the hammer because the previous owner bobbed it.It looks like a mim hammer won't work without replacing several parts.Does anyone know where I can find one of the older hammers?

I hadn't even thought about contacting Smith and Wesson. Is there anyone or dept. in particular I should ask for? I am guessing I can get their contact info off their web site.
