I recently aquired a old action pistol 586 from a friend. The action is still good but its wearing a 6" after market barrel. I am thinking about turning it into a 3" gun,but I'm open to suggestions. So folks ,what would you do to a gun like this?

I have checked around and 3"barrels are like hen's teeth. If I go with a 3" barrel I'll probably have to cut down a longer one and install a wiegand ramp. One of the guy's on this site has an extra 6" but I don't know if its a 586 or 686.Either one would work as the gun will get duracoated, but a steel barrel would be easier to work with.

I hadn't even thought about contacting Smith and Wesson. Is there anyone or dept. in particular I should ask for? I am guessing I can get their contact info off their web site.

A couple of the guys in customer service have been there quite a long time. Hopefully ou'll get one of them on the phone.
Asking for a barrel works okay but asking for it by product code number can work even better if you have a few of the product codes to give them it may help.
I got a 7.5" 629 power port barrel from them awhile back. The gentleman I was talking to was certain they never made such a thing but with the product code he could even tell how many barrels were left in stock.

I say go buy a 4" barre for the revolver and carry it. What is an extra inch??? IT IS AN INCH.....LOL
seriously, I an not a fan of 6" revolvers but I a ma fan of 4" or less. I like my 4" barrel on my 586. It keeps it well balanced with recoil and astetics.

Go the the Brownells web site and see what the Product Code # is for a 3 inch 586. Then call S&W service department and ask if that barrel is available.

If it isn't then try e-gunparts and other parts houses until one is found or there isn't any available.

If none's available screw a 4" bbl on there or send the gun to Bowen or Clements or Stroh and have them cut and fit a 6 in barrel to three.

The later route is rather spendy...and time consuming. According to many well worth it.

To check revolver parts got to the S&W home page and the quick links pull down menu and select parts lists. Then click on revolver parts list (PDF or Excel).
A brief check of the 586 model shows no 3" barrels just 4, 6's & 8's in various configurations.

Send it to Carl Sokol at Chestnut Mountain Sports.

Have the barrel cut to 3", muzzle re-crowned, and forcing cone cut to 11 degrees. Add a 7-shot cylinder, night sights, and a bead blast blue. Get the trigger job too.

About the only way I know to improve a 586. They are pretty much perfect already, IMHO of course. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.

I am thinking of getting a 4" barrel on my 586 keep us informed on your progress so we can see how it turns out...
