Your slide issue is probably just a combination of a new & tight pistol, and possibly some underpowered ammo. Run some hotter stuff through it and I would bet it corrects itself.

Make sure that your fingers are not inadvertently pushing the slide lock up while firing.

Follow the instructions exactly as shown in the manual and you shouldn't have any problems, e.g. grip safety.

seldon14 got it right. Also, the slide stops on S&W Shields can be very difficult to push down to release the slide, so I don't even try. Also, not using the slide stop as a slide release eliminates possible wear on the contact surfaces.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to diagnose the problem until I took the pistol to the range and fired some higher powered ammo. What you're doing at home is not a fair trial for the pistol.
