This is a sad story indeed and I hope the OP eventually gets this mess sorted. This is a common occurrence these days unfortunately and not just with S&W. Jump on the ruger forum and there are plenty of posts on unhappy Ruger customers there too. But from what I hear Rugers customer service is...
The 586, 686 and 617 8-3/8” models usually sell for $1000-$1200 here in Australia. And still sell quickly at that price. Have see a few up to $1500 as well.
If the price is right I would jump on that if you really want a 8-3/8" 686.
It took me 2 years to find this one here in Australia, they just don't come up for sale to often and I just had to have this 686-3.
Love it, makes a great steel silhouette gun . Better still I have already been offered...
Would be a real Shame if Coonan stops production again. I bought a Coonan classic .357 mag about 2 years ago and still love it. I agree they are over priced but I have absolutely no regrets with mine. It's been super reliable and gets plenty of attention at the range.

Some would say the 8-3/8" barrel is muzzle heavy but I don't find that a problem. They are actually a pleasure to shoot and soak up recoil nicely! No regrets getting mine.
