At the LGS today and a guy came in that's a regular there. Awhile back he came across a 686 no dash in 8 3/8" in excellent condition ( no box, tools or paperwork ). He said that someone had made an offer to buy it from him but that said buyer needed some time to scrape the money together, so he declined the sale.

He is the type of guy that wheel/deals everything he does. Won't give you a price, wants to know what you'd pay for anything you're interested in first. He said he was thinking about selling it to fund more flying lessons so he can get closer to getting his FAA certification.

I told him that I was interested, but before I made him an offer I'd have to do some research to see what they're worth.

So what do you say guys ? How much is too much for a 8 3/8" 686 no dash ?

As always any help is appreciated.

Not a whole lot of 8 3/8 686's out there. Does it have the adjustable front sight? I'm thinking 500-600 is a decent deal if you want a long barrel for range work.

If the price is right I would jump on that if you really want a 8-3/8" 686.
It took me 2 years to find this one here in Australia, they just don't come up for sale to often and I just had to have this 686-3.
Love it, makes a great steel silhouette gun . Better still I have already been offered much more than I payed for this gun but I ain't parting with it anytime soon.

$500 would be a screaming deal (for you, that is), and many recent examples online sold in the $700-750 range, so somewhere between those two would be a fair offering price. Presuming the seller isn't looking at prices of pristine examples with original box and contents...

I paid $750 for my dash 4 and it's the only one I've ever seen. I'd buy another for that price in a minute

I checked GB and there were several listed. Beginning opening bid was at $950 to $1250 but none had any opening bids. One started at a $100 opening bid and was up to $850 but reserve was not met yet. Most had around 4 days left on auctions.
There is one with box and papers around a $1500 opening bid.

Personally, I seek any obsolete Smith 8 3/8" in .22, .38, .357, and .44. I have a 686 and 586 in that barrel length and would be willing to go up to $850 if in near new condition..........more if box and original grips are present. They are indestructible and like shooting Hand Rifles!!

Forget the guy's odd way of dealing. Just make him an offer and see what takes place. You will not regret having and shooting one of these.

The 586, 686 and 617 8-3/8" models usually sell for $1000-$1200 here in Australia. And still sell quickly at that price. Have see a few up to $1500 as well.
