I think you might be on to something there; S&W packaging a matching pair, with serial numbers of xxxR and xxxP, that sort of thing. I can certainly imagine them selling more of the pistol models with that additional option.
If you can't be bothered to look at the (long) existing thread on open sights for the FPC;
Why in the world would S&W send the FPC out without open sights?
I don't really know what extra hand-holding can be provided.
I'm glad that S&W didn't ship with sights - one less thing to throw in a drawer. It would most likely have been cheap, and wouldn't have fit w/ my setup.
I was able to do some research on many available options and purchase exactly what I wanted.

I found the bag for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown to be a better, trimmer fit than the standard S&W bag.
