S&W replaced my in warrenty M38, cracked just like yours, with a NIB M638. I wouldn't shoot my cracked frame revolver.

Unfortunately you are correct. I had a Mod 38 with a similar crack in the same location. The crack in my Smith was a little wider than yours. I sent mine back to S&W for evaluation. They confirmed the frame was cracked and returned the grips. Several weeks later they replaced it with a new 638...

Look under the forcing cone at the very thin portion of the frame under it. My mod 38 frame cracked at this point after very few standard 38 special rounds. I read that the barrels may have been screwed too tight. S&W replaced it with a mod 638.

Call S&W. They will send you everything needed.

Has anyone tried the method of improving a Smith revolver trigger as shown on Utube by Larry Potterfield of MidwayUSA? It involves honing (polishing) sear and trigger surfaces with a fine India stone and I'm a little concerned that since these are case hardened parts that honing might cut away...
