    Another neat pickup- chopped 1917

Pete: Tell me the story too. Obviously a new barrel with the full lug for the ejector rod. I haven't been able to establish what sorts of barrels can be transplanted onto a 1917. My pitted, grungy-looking Brazilian cries out for a changed look. ...round butt? how short a barrel could be fitted...

Need help identifying an old S&W top break

Good information here: Information on Smith and Wessons Should be enough to get you the model. Those grips are a mystery, hard to believe they are original unless some sort of special order was involved. Handsome piece.

Help finding Smith & Wesson .38 Super revolver

Hmmm. '.38 super' was/is a rimless cartridge developed by Colt for some models of 1911. Supposedly able to punch through all known body-armor in the 1930s. While it is certainly conceivable that some revolvers were converted to take moon clips of .38 super, I have never heard of such a thing...

    Lemon Squeezer

I suspect that top-break revolvers invoked military use to Britons, while Americans thought of top-breaks as cheap knockoffs of S&W. There is that Russian .357 top-break prototype out there somewhere. Modern Firearms - IzMech MP-412 I don't see why an updated top-break design would be...

    S&W breaktop

Take a look at: Armchair Gun Show, antique guns and collectible firearms for sale Down the left side of the page there are links leading to some guides for recognizing early S&Ws. Here's the direct link: http://armchairgunshow.com/SW-TB-info.html

    Info on Army 1917

Kuhnhausen's 'S&W Revolver' has step-by-step disassembly instructions for N frames. I followed them to detail strip my Brazilian with no problems. For specifics--e.g. stuck screws etc.--search or post on the 'smithing forum.

    USAF Reserve 1917 Target

Learning about the barrel marking makes the possible story clearer. (harp arpeggios) The owner finds a 'Fitzed' 1917. Cut trigger-guard, empty lanyard hole, 3 inch barrel. Falls in love with gun, adds target barrel, ramp, sights. I can't imagine the history going the other way: Gunfighter gets...

    The Odd Couple

I wonder if the original owner did alter the front sight on the 1½ incher. How does it shoot, or rather, how does the point of aim match the barrel?

    Need help w/Hammerless Top Break

Same problem, no answers My 4th model arrived with a bubba'd mainspring--a cut down spring from some other model with a shim stuffed into the spring notch on the floor of the butt. Replaced the spring (thankyou Numrich's) but the hammer/firing pin don't rebound properly; the trigger won't pull...

    Info please!!!!

You need to identify the model and get a rough idea of how old the gun is. This page has links to S&W information that should help: Armchair Gun Show, antique guns and collectible firearms for sale If the gun's condition is good, cleaning the barrel, forcing cone and cylinder should be as much...

Renewing my California C&R gets me...?

I just received the renewal notice for my C&RFFL. To date, the only advantage for me was taking direct shipment of an old Stevens shotgun. For all handguns, every nitpicking (expensive) hoop is the same as for a non 03 holder. Does anyone know of any advantage to renewing this bit of paper...

    Find of a lifetime

Gad, what a haul! Questions: What is the apparent two-tone effect on the Brazilian? and How often would one find a lanyard ring on a 1938 .44 Special? Thanks

I am going to look at an old 1917 tomorrow

Just to confuse things a bit more. My Brazilian has smooth wood (1917 style) grips. They are stamped inside with the serial number and match the frame. Sounds like a great bargain
