I use a couple of cleaning patches around the barrel (cheapest) with no issues of marring.

It's entirely up to you, what your budget can withstand, it will get expensive depending on the look and functionally you want, but it's fun. This is what I did to mine, changed everything but the upper and lower receiver and barrel.
