Ok..I'm a lil confused. How does the barrel nut wrench from mp15-22.com work? Does it attach to something.. Does anybody own this.. What's up with the set- screw?

I wanna get a wrench & was wondering how this one operated. Doesn't appear to be long enough.

Or.. Am I not seeing it?

Thanks

Looks like at the bottom of the "socket" it has a set screw. So you would get a piece of pipe that will fit over your barrel and insert it into the socket and snug it down with the set screw.

I have the one from H&W and it gets the job done, but you can't go wrong with ordering one from tacticool22, he has some great products.

Just a wild guess but it looks like a 3/4" tube might slide into it then the set screw is tightened...guess i was a little to slow typing lol

Originally Tacticool22 also made his first ones that way also, where you supply the length of pipe to mount on the end there. He suggested PVC but in my case I found a perfect piece of 3/4" OD metal pipe in the scrap heap at Home Depot that was also the right length.
anyway I suggest whatever you buy get one with the extension tube already on it so you don't have to find or make one. You actually need his entire kit including the aluminum vice jaws and the adapter nut to make sure you don't damage something while doing the change.

Stupid question for the day.

All the instructions talk about clamping on the barrel to avoid damage to the polymer upper when undoing the barrel nut. I get that.

Do you also need to do that to tighten them up? If you've legally SBR'd it ow do you clamp it if you've cut it off very close to the handguard?

Yes and no. Yes because you have to do it that way and no because you no longer have the stock handguard mounting under the nut. Once you have the new adapter nut you tighten it up with the barrel in the vise with the new style wrench (in a pinch you can use an a AR multitool wrench just remember to cover the adapter threads like the directions say to prevent thread damage). Then you just screw or whatever your new handguard adapter onto the new adapter/barrel nut. Tighten down your FH, Comp, or suppressor and then take it out of the vice and put your new short (SBR) handguard on the gun. Same directions for a longer barrel setup.

Yeah but by barrel is 10.5" and the hand guards are 9" That doesn't leave much space to clamp and get the spanner in.

I'm using the stock hand guards just trying to SBR the barrel.

If you're spending the money to go with an SBR, you might as well spend the few extra dollars and get the free float handguard adapter and a new handguard. That's what I'm doing. I'm not sure what the torque specs are for the original barrel nut, but I wouldn't want to torque on it very much while holding the upper and possibly twisting it.

Meh, I suppose. I don't find much wrong with the S&W polymer hand guard.

Hmmmm on the freefloat adapter.

Well, you could always cut the factory handguard down. But depending on which barrel nut wrench you have, that may not work for you. There is one that is longer (about a foot?) and one that is a short piece you add your own length of pipe to.

With a short barrel the long wrench might not give you enough barrel to clamp on to. With the short wrench you could cut the correct length pipe. In either case, if the handguard is so long that you can't get the wrench in and clamp the barrel, you're in the same spot...clamping the receiver, which could destroy it.

With the free float hand guard adapter you would install it without the handguard installed, which would leave plenty of barrel for the vice. But you would have to purchase a replacement handguard to thread onto the free float adapter.

Well, it looks like I'm a little late to the thread.
Brett248vista and others answered for me, so I have very little to add.
Those ends are no longer available because they are all sold.
I carried the H&W but they are too heavy (shipping was spendy) and they don't go over a flash hider like the ones I make.

+ 1 for Tacticools Barrel Nut Wrench and barrel vise jaws... Very pleased to have got my set.!!!!!!!
And it so nice, not to have to take the flash hider off every time.!!!
