Steel Challenge with a 15-22?

New guy here and all that jazz.
I currently use a very lightly moded Ruger 10-22 for Steel Challenge.
The gun is about 20 years old. It has one of those Butler Creek stock/barrel combos. I don't think they even make them anymore!
I slapped a C-More on it and do fairly well for a little as I shoot SC.

I have just ordered a 15-22 MOE and would love to think I could use this in SC.

Other than the JP spring kit and a Magpul AFG I don't have any plans for heavy modification.

Are any of you guys running a 15-22 in SC or similar competitions? I would love to see pics of your set-up if you do!

This was My 1st rifle and I plan on competing in .22 steel matches and pistol carbine competitions this year. I'll let you know how it goes.

How are you doing with your present 10-22? The 10-22 is a much more accurate 22 than 15-22 will ever be but you can still have fun shooting the 15-22 on steel.

The ranges & size of steel you are shooting will make a big difference.

Small steel at longer yardages will be somewhat of a challenge using the 15-22 but large silhouettes & shorter to intermediate ranges will be OK & fun shooting with the 15-22 AR/M-4 platform 22.

My personal 15-22 is not near accurate enough to be competitive on the steel challenges I have been to but still a lot of fun.

For a semi-auto 22 the 10-22 is about impossible to beat using another 22 semi-auto platform.

Started shooting steel challenge and Ruger Rimfire using the 15-22 but the 10-22 seems to work better for me. I just can't pull the trigger as fast with the 15-22 and I don't want to invest the money for a better trigger that may or may not be reliable. As for accuracy, the 15-22 just fine. Your not going to be shooting out past 25yds very much, at least around here we don't. The one thing I didn't like about the 15-22 was the lenth of the handguard. I like my grip a little further out. I just put a 12" handguard on mine this week and it is definatley more comfortable for me. You will not be disappointed with either of these two rifles for steel challenge.

I built my 15-22 for shooting steel. I haven't got into actual competitions yet, but that's what I had in mind when I put it together. Mine will hang with my 10-22 just fine for steel targets out to 50. The JP yellow's work great for me. I wish I could get the afg out a couple more slots, but all the way out is working fine now. I did get the barrel shroud because I like the way it looks, but the extra weight at the end of the muzzle helps me get from target to target faster/steadier.

I'm going to put a cheap red dot on it in the next week or so. Not sure if I'm going with the Primary Arms Micro or a cheaper BSA.
This is the small diameter tube from Nordic. It was light (10oz.)and the price was right. I've found for me the lighter the better when it comes to shooting steel.

Another good thing about the 15-22 is its weight and adjustability. We shoot as a family and everyone can shoot it comfortably.

Here is my other set-up. It's heading back to S&W next week for some extraction issues. No foward grip now, that was for my son and it didn't work for him.


And while we're talking about steel this is my son's setup. It weighs in just tad bit over 4lbs. (he is only 8)

It's a Tactical Solutions. Weighs in at 15 oz. The lighter the better for me. Weight is also a problem for younger shooters who may not have the strenth to keep a long gun on target. I know some like a little weight on the muzzle to keep the flip down but it seems that the extra weight out front makes stopping the gun on the next plate a little slower. The little bit of extra flip without extra weight can easily be compesated for during transition to next plate.

If the M&P 15-22 is good enough for Tom Yost, it's gonna' be great for me! I've seen him tear up too many Steel Challenge Courses of Fire to doubt him. 'Course he works for Smith & Wesson.

I always finished DFL in Rimfire Rifle Open with my '67 Weatherby XXII and original factory scope. Never missed much, but she (I) sure was slow!

But my father always used to say "The worth of a scholar is not determined by the quality of his brush." So my hopes are high with my new Steel Challenge rig.

I shot my 15-22 in Steel Challenge yesterday, for the first time. My rifle...(actually the wife's, from Santa....you know) is equipped with a Truglo $39 red dot, a hogue grip, and a fore-grip that is also a tripod.

Other competitors were amazed at this little rifle. I had constant questions about it. Before it was over, when I walked up...they were all saying...."here comes the fun gun" and they are right....it is (ahem) a blast.

Yesterday we shot, in the rain with no fogging problems, we shot large and small plates out to 20 yds. I had zero problem finding the targets with the red dot.
My best times of the day, shooting a 5 plate string, were < 3 seconds..2.6 something to be almost exact.....my first time shooting this rifle in Steel Challenge....I felt pretty good about that....and I feel I can do better.

The wife and I have put more than 3000 rounds through this little rifle since Xmas day, and not 1 problem of any kind.We shoot Blazer bulk 40 gr 525 to a pack.

This is an excellent little rifle, for this sport, as well as many others. We highly recommend it and kids love them.

I added a Weaver 1-3X20 Classic V (duplex crosshair) scope to my stock 15-22, and it's quite competitive at our club steel matches.

I shot my MOE in steel challenge last week and didn't feel at a disadvantage. I currently shoot it in the iron sight class.

I was on our local 'Steel Challenge' club's website trying to find out if I could shoot my 15-22 at these things. Looks like yes, according to you guys! I wasn't sure if it was just .22 pistols only. They had a steel shoot just for 'tactical' .22's not too long ago.

I'm the match director for steel challenge at my home club. At our last match this past Saturday we had four people shooting 15-22's, myself included. In fact, one guy bought his after I let him shoot mine. And they are plenty accurate for shooting steel.

Very nice. What do you guys require at your matches? I can't seem to find the answer on a website for a local match. For example: Sling needed? Minimum amount of magazines, etc.

My PC model is setup specifically for Steel Challenge and Ruger Rimfire Challenge events. I won the Carbine Open division at the fall Steel Challenge event at York, PA last year. I used the gun out of the box last year at the Ruger Rimfire World Championship in New Mexico. Had a hard time getting used to the 5+# trigger compared to my old Rem 597 with it's Jard 2# trigger. Still finished 23rd overall with a top 15 in the pistol section.
I built my PC model up to be similar to the AR+TS upper
that BJ Norris used to win the Ruger world title.

I took the polymer handguard off in favor of longer alloy one from Nordic ($64) because being able to hold it farther down towards the barrel helps in transitions and in locking down the red dot when moving from plate to plate. The PC's stock RRA 2-stage trigger w/JP springs added, while pretty good, had too long a lockup time and reset length, so I switched it out for the fastest AR competition trigger available, the Geissele Dynamic Super 3-Gun ($210). Wow what a difference. I can do a single plate Bill Driil in 1.47s for 6 rounds and a 3 plate in 1.51s for 6 rounds. While I should have a C-More Railway red dot like most of my other guns I use a TruGlo dual color reflex sight ($65) I have modified to be 100% reliable and bright enough for high daylight use. I use a Nordic Tactical comp ($27) on the barrel not for reducing recoil and such but to increase the sound to help register rounds on the timers. I use an Ergo grip ($15) which is superior to the Hogue the PC came with. Softer and fits my hand better. I also added a soft rubber Vltor recoil pad ($20) to the PC's Vltor stock to give it a better grip on my shoulder.
Most feel that setting an AR15-22 to shoot speed events you need to look at what 3-gun shooters are doing to their ARs. Speed triggers and close to bare handguards not quad rails are the preferred setup. The reason I picked the Nordic handguard is because it is the reduced diameter one (1.62") so I can get my whole hand around the end of it and it is 13" in length.
And I am almost 65 and have been shooting competitively for only about 4 years. Not to mention 2 years ago I had to switch from shooting left-handed to shooting right handed exclusively due to arthritis in my left hand.
I also shoot IPDA and USPSA action pistol events and built an AR for multigun this spring.

Man, you went all out Photoracer! I like Geissele triggers since I hear so much great things about them. I might go with one for my AR-15 build(forgot the name of it but it's more of a combat trigger). Your really tempting me with that handguard as I have not modified my stock 15-22 aside from just rail panels since I don't mount anything on them. Does the handguard accept a sling mount of some sort? If I'm not mistaken, I didn't see a sling on yours. Assuming that was a picture of your rifle I saw here.

We require people to have enough mags, or at least a way to reload mags quickly. Also a safe way to transport from stage to stage. And we are requiring the use of a chamber flag for extra safety. We have a small supply for rent at $3 which is refunded when they are returned, otherwise the money goes twords resuppling in case we run low on flags.

Of course your club may differ, but that's what we are running right now. This is our first year and our first three matches have each had 28 people show up, so we are quite happy with such a strong start.

No but I have one of those buffer tube sling adapters mounted on the polymer buffer tube right behind the receiver. I have a couple of single point slings but the one I recently bought for my AR will be the one I use on both guns if needed. You don't need a sling for SC or RR. However in some parts of the country they allow the use of tactical .22 carbines in IDPA multigun matches. If your stock has a QR sling hole you are fine in the rear. Then you would need a rail sling adapter for the front. I bought one 3" rail section for the Nordic rail just in case but so far I have only put it on to use a bipod at the range or to put on iron sights.

Yeah I went all out for a competition setup because I use it for 2-3 matches per month at my own club and some out of town ones several times a year.
