Hi...
I want to replace the original grip and im not sure which one would be the best:

a.) Magpul MOE Grip
b.) Magpul MOE-K GRip
c.) Hogue Pistol Grip
d.) Ergo Grip

Any ideas? Are they too complicated to install? Which one would be the best for large hands?

Thanks..

I like the Magpul MOE grip. I've had it on for about a week, and it's so much more comfortable. Install is tricky because it's plastic wrapped in rubber. There is a spring, for some pin, I forget which one, that has to be placed in between the rubber and plastic for it to fit correctly. It was tricky, but once in it works perfectly.

I have the CAA UPG16, has 6 palm pieces to change/select. Also has the mini storage inside.

i have the MOE+ grip on my AR. I love that grip. it is the MOE but rubberized. but like the MOE, it isn't a perfect fit on the 15-22. there is a space between the rear of the grip and the lower receiver. that kind of stuff drive me nuts.

i think the ergo has a space too, but not as bad as the MOE?

i got the hogue on my AK. rubberized, feels very comfortable at first, but during actual shooting, i don't like how it forces my fingers into the finger grooves... it doesn't match up to hand's natural grip. i wear 7 1/2 medical gloves if that helps any. a lot of people love the hogue. i won't change mine out for now, but i wish it didn't have such deep grooves.

the easiest install is the MOE-K, but that has a smaller grip circumference, and since you said you have large hands, it may not be a good fit for you.

if i were you... and what i did, was to buy the magpul MIAD grip. it is modular. you can change out the backstraps based on hand size. there is also a removeable a2 style finger groove you can use if you want.

word of caution. if you don't use either of the 2 larger backstraps with the thumb groove, the spring for the rear take-down pin will fall into a groove and your take down pin can come out when pulled out. this is pretty well documented and there are fixes for it.

anyways, since you have a larger hand, you can experiment with the different back straps and front finger groove until you find a combo that works for you.

ALSO..... you will need to buy the AR-10 grip wedge. it will take up any gap there is between the grip and the lower receiver. only like $4. it isn't compatible with the MOE from what I understand. Could be wrong.

yeah, so my 2 cents, Magpul MIAD with the AR-10 grip wedge.

The magpul grip with the rubber on it would be the MOE+ grip.

I would go with either the magpul MOE or the Hogue. The magpul K-grip is about the same in circumference as the stock grip so if your looking for a larger grip I would stay away from that one. I would do a search on youtube, I know there are some good videos on there that will walk you through it. Its a pretty simple process. You will need a long allen wrench, I can't remember what size it is. PM me if you can't find any youtube videos and I can send you some pictures detailing the process.

I would replace option a and b with a Magpul MIAD if you have large hands. The MOE K is for people with small hands, and the MOE is set up for the people somewhere in the middle. I have large hands and can use both, but the MIAD with the large back strap is where it's at IMO.

You'll have to find out which one is the best for you out of the remaining three options.

If you can't try them out ahead of time, the MIAD would be a good option due to the interchangeable front and back straps. However, it does require a little imagination or a $3 part to make it work on the 15-22.

The Hogue is a nice grip, but I can't stand the size/shape of the finger grooves(especially with gloves) so it's not for me. Several people I shoot with use it on their AR's though.

I haven't tried the Ergo grips on AR's, but I've read they make a good one for guys with big hands. The finger grooves look like they would work better with gloves too.

Check out the CAA UPG16 - can even color match if you have a FDE MOE & it comes with 3 back straps & 3 finger groove options for perfect sizing.

I'm using a simpler CAA grip without all the interchangeable parts (sorry, don't know the model number) and I like the way it naturally fits my fingers and gives a more substantial feel. If you know people who shoot AR's and wouldn't mind, ask them what they use and if you could wrap your hand around it to try out the fit. Your hand will know better what's right than a bunch of well-intentioned people on the internet. It's very important that your rifle feel right to you so take your time in selecting your grip.

Ergo is the best by far. Several of the gun makers also private label Ergos on their ARs. For large hands I recommend the oversize or overmolded versions. Although my hands are not big I use an oversize Ergo with palmshelf on one of my precision tactical setups and it feels really good. I use the thinner Ergos on both my 15-22s and my ARs including my 3-gun custom Stag (Stag 3G comes with an Ergo anyway). I own at least one Hogue that came with a gun and right now it is sitting in a box somewhere.
MOEs are designed for their utility not their feel. If you want to use the grip for storage get an MOE. If you want to shoot with great feel get an Ergo.

johnr: any special model you would recommend for the mp15-22?

anyone got a picture of how bad the gap is with the CAA?

Yes the UPG16 does have a gap but only at the top of the back strap where it curves and meets the lower. Essentially, where the webbing between thumb and pinter finger would be. It is a pretty big gap I admit, maybe 2mm, but a zero issue for me as nothing could ever get into it (in terms of hand or skin) and you can only see it if you hold the gun pointed forward and look at it from behind. From the sides it is virtually unnoticeable.

I use this grip on 2 other AR's and they have zero gap. So, this tells me, the plastic lower on the S&W is out of spec.

Whatever grip you decide on, don't forget the rear take down dent and spring are under the grip and will need to be attended to. They are easy to lose and hard to find. Just be careful when you remove the stock grip, keeping the lower upside down and you will see it clearly.

Thanks for checking. Yeah, the lower receiver design of the 15-22 is shaped differently than a true AR. That is why grips with the back strap that curve up to meet the lower receiver don't fit flush. This is true even for the 15-22 MOE version rifle as it comes from the factory.

The gap doesn't bother a lot of people, but that kind of stuff drives me nuts.

I also have an AR, but I am new to 15-22s and I wasn't aware of this gap issue on these rifles until I tried to install my MIAD grip. I did some research and ordered the Magpul AR-10 grip wedge which will solve the gap problem.
