.223 side by side .300 Blackout

Some people have asked for side by side pics of the .223 with the .300 Blackout. For those of u unfamiliar the only difference between .223/5.56 and .300 blackout is the "barrel". Everything else is exactly the same when it comes to the weapon.

This is a picture comparing the 2 cartridges to one another. The .223 on the left @ 55gr and the .300 Blackout on the right @ 110gr. This is a .300 blackout supersonic round, designed to be used without a suppressor. There are heavier loads that go to about 220gr also.

My .223/5.56 has now retired to my "sissy" round that will only be used at the range for cheaper plinking. It's like shooting both my 9mm barrel and my .40 barrel in my .40 Shield, lol.

Here is a similar pic with 125 gr. 300 black vs. 55 gr. 223. I did the image comparison for my brother the other day, so I may as well share it here too. Just a slight difference in the camera angle from Smitty's picture. I have a build date of 02/18 for my DDm4 V7 300 black. The 300 blackout ammo is harder to find than 223/5.56. Especially the subsonic ammo.

have to admit, i've never fired .300...so what is the comparison to 5.56 for functionality? (range, velocity, accuracy, impact, etc)...i've looked at the .458 socom as a good way to really waste money and destroy small buildings with my hobby, but never really thought much about the .300...

While forming brass for the 300 recently I filled a empty 357 case with water and poured it into the blackout case, it overflowed the case. One of the favorite powders of 300 loaders is H110 in which the 357 uses more of than the blackout Case volume is on par with the 38spl.
 
.300 is a bit harder to find on the shelves. Which is why most people order it online in bulk or reload their own. But at times like this, just about anything is hard to find lol.

5.56 compared to .300 isnt even funny when it comes to medium sized game. My .300 is my hog, coyote, deer weapon at my camp. It shoots a .308 projectile in a .223 case. So of course the heavier bullet is slower than the .223. But it carries a considerable amount more punch behind it. Its like getting ran over by a volks wagon, compared to an 18 wheeler, LMAO.......The .458 is also a nice round, but down here in Louisiana we dont have Elk and Caribou to shoot at. So that huge bullet would be a waste of meet for me. The .300 fits just perfect and it uses the 5.56 mags. So there is no need to buy all new Pmags for it. And we all know how hard those Pmags are to find, and the price u would pay buying new ones for a new bullet.

Accuracy on the .300 depends on bullet and the weapon setup. There are many guys testing them and getting different outcomes. One popular video on the internet is showing guys shooting a 9" barrel suppressed at 750 meters. Of course it works....=-)

ahhh, good point with the mags, hadn't thought if they would single-stack in a 5.56 mag, i better check that...and my friend that uses .458 socom rounds hunts hogs in TX with it i think...loves it, because it's a one-shot-stopper no matter where you hit em... (i may be totally off on that, i THINK that's where he hunts em, but i know he uses it for hogs...probably a bit of overkill to hunt down those pesky paper targets that keep trying to attack me at the range, but you never know!)
 
^^ Oh i dont doubt the .458 being a 1 shot 1 kill weapon on a hog at all, lol. The .300 wins me over just because its so versatile with the 5.56. You can fit 30rds of .300 blackout in a 5.56 mag just as u could fit 30rds of 5.56. And when ur like me and u have many 5.56 Pmags, its pointless to build a bigger weapon that requires buying all new accessories such as those mags.

Plus the .300 was designed to be suppressed, it runs both subsonic and supersonic rounds. Side by side unsuppressed the 5.56 is actually a louder weapon. But thats because the .300 round was designed this way. Now whe u throw on a suppressor, its quieter than a 9mm with a suppressor. Can u imagine shooting hogs with a suppressed weapon like that. You can literally shoot 3 hogs before the rest ever know what happened, LMAO
 
The more I read about 300BLK the more I think this is the way to go. Reloading it seems pretty simple and the cases will be easy to make. Plus, 308 bullets are pretty available even now. I just think AAC has hit a home run with this caliber. The fact that all you need is a new barrel makes it extremely appealing.

I started a thread on here about .458 the other week after looking into it for a while. They do single stack into a 5.56 mag, so no new mags needed! If I remember correctly, you can get 9 bullets in a 30rd and 7 bullets in a 20rd. My only problem is justifying it to myself after just building a 300...

Just isnt worth sacrificing capacity, when u use it for what i do at the camp. And it doesnt suppress near as well as a .300. So it doesnt fit the criteria IMO. Its a nice round, but its not justifiable..........Now if the .458 was designed to run subsonic, then it would be a different discussion of course, lol.

This is why the .300 is what the 5.56 should have been.. Just listen at what he's talking about.

Besides, If you damage the mouth of a 5.56 case while reloading, You can chuck it into the pile of cases for making .300. That's one of the more appealing things to me.
 
Well, I took the plunge. I ordered a 300 Blackout barrel and the reloading dies. Delivery is going to be about a month out due to all the crazyness but I'll make a post when I get everything and do a range report.

Its taking me just as long to acquire the powder and projectiles to hand load for my .300 I still haven't fired mine -- no rounds yet but I am almost there.

Yeah bullets may be an issue. I have a store locally where I think I can get a few...maybe. I was lucky to find a set of Lee dies and I'm going to use the same powder from my .223 reloading. Hoping that will work out ok.
 
i actually know some operators overseas that swear by 6.8, but i've never actually shot it...i can just give good "second-hand" reviews as far as accuracy and impact...
