Sublette Co. Wyo sheriff bans cowboy boots and hats

Boys,
I've saw this going on for years, every time a newly elected Sheriff comes into office
they want to root the old timers out, especially those with decades of experience,
no sheriff wants deputies that, they (sheriffs) think knows more and or have more experience that they do.

What with Gene Bryson having eight times the service and experience,
than that of the newly elected Stephen Haskell has, with his three years in law enforcement under his belt......

In Haskell's own words that his deputies, looked like a "Skittle Patrol".

Makes me wonder just what image he wants to portrayed before the public eye with combat boots and baseball caps.

Class A's call for a tie and campaign hat, sheriffs style hat or a western style of cover.
Ball caps are fine for the firing range and softball games.......

On a lighter note, I was involved in a dust up er two...And I always had my hat on. ;):D

Company policies and dress codes can change in all businesses and industries. Comply or don't let the door hit you in the butt.

"Skittle patrol". Maybe he ment that everyone kinda dresses the way they feel like. Some might wear cowboy boots while others are wearing shoes or other boots? If that's the case I agree with him. Your own photo showed police officers all dressed the same, there was not one guy who had a baseball cap or no hat at all. Uniformity!

I am a dinosaur and I don't like change. Seems like this officer didn't care for it either. He had been a sheriff himself in another town so there may have been other reasons to try to convince him to retire. Many times, especially with someone new to a job, it is more comfortable not to have to deal with someone that has been around longer, held a job comparable to yours and probably knows your job better than you do.

Just for information, I wear a ball cap most of the time. It holds my pencil over my ear while I am working in my business as a contractor, catches cob webs and dust and shades my eyes when cutting over my head. But, unless you wear a chin strap or have it nailed to your head, it too will blow off when hit by a gust of wind.

I went through a western phase after visiting Dallas and have several pairs of western boots, snap cuff shirts and a 4X beaver Stetson. About 20 years ago and 40 pounds lighter, I thought that I looked pretty darn sharp wearing those clothes. I also agree that the Texas Rangers and others that wear similar garb look pretty damn cool.

There is no disrespect shown them when in a situation. I think that with the proper attitude and demeanor it is not the outfit that you are wearing but the MAN inside that matters.

Having worked as a Lawman in Sublette County in a small town in the late 70's, the uniform of the day was a Brown Shirt and Blue Jeans for the Deputies. Cowboy boots were normal footwear. It didn't bother me but I'm a firm believer in a true class A uniform as to look professional commands respect. Stetsons are far from unprofessional as they are worn in many agencies, both state and local to this day although I kinda miss seeing FHP Troopers in their old Stetsons. As I remember, the old and longtime Sheriff of Sublette Co., " Bud ", used to wear flannel shirts and his Sheriff's Star on same and as I recall, a Colt Det. Special on his belt. He was a grand, old time Sheriff and everyone who knew him loved him. Truly a different time.

As sure as I am of this, I am equally sure that had you ever encountered a dust-up worthy of taking off your hat, then hell would well and truly have been coming to breakfast. :)

Wonder what he would say to this vetran ?

" never mind.....I'm sorry"

Respect is something earned, not dressed for. Having said that, I understand looking sharp, but that can be achieved by different dress in different locales. I don't want to see ALL cops looking exactly the same anyways, boring.

Don't worry, eventually all police everywhere will have the same uniform:

I used to vacation in Sublette County every year...Museum of the Mountain Man, Pinedale, Boulder (and it's huge "mall"), Burnt Lake, Wind River Range, and on and on. What a great place. We would meet up with some of the Deputies and have them out for a campfire dinner. How times have changed.

Your friend Iggy is just sittin' here shakin' his head and thinkin' "git out while the gittin's good."

Old dinosaurs like me and Gene need to step aside. We were from a time when "Officer Presence" was more important than "swat pants" and combat boots.

The Wyoming that he and I knew is gone. Law Enforcement has changed, society has changed. It's hard to accept the changes we have seen, but our time has come and gone.

BTW, when the WHP went to Smokey Bear hats, I went to ranchin'..

I reckon Gene and I should just keep on wearin' our boots and Stetsons and take pride in the time we served the citizens of the State of Wyoming that use to be.

Iggy, I prefer your way. I recently read something from Simply Rugged, where a Texas lawman contacted him about holsters for his carry Colt 1911 and backup Colt SAA. Sounds like my kind of guy.

I've been through Wyoming, and it's second to Idaho as where I want to be by a small margin. Family in Idaho wins out.

Truer words were never spoke.

The only thing that surprised me about all this was that Bryson was still on the job. Went to some training event or other with him at the academy when it was still in the Fair Grounds. A good hand then and a loss to the SO now.

Buford57,
I used to teach at the Academy when it was at the fairgrounds. Maybe we both rode with Custer at the same time too.
