I read a few years ago, during the first Obama gun and ammo scare that Smith and Wesson made and maybe is still making uppers in the 5.45x39 cal. Is this still true? or is another company making something like that for an AR more specially the Sport model ? would the upper be the only change needed or would new magazines and maybe even a magazine well adapter of some sort?

I am asking because sometimes when .223 is hard to find the Russian is only a cupala hundred bucks for over 1000 rounds.

thanks

Not sure. I believe Natchez sells S&W uppers but I think the one's I've seen listed were all .223/5.56. It might be worth a look if the S&W site doesn't list any.

It was known as the M&P-15R. They sold both complete rifles and uppers, but discontinue them after a fairly short run. You can find them for sale on the auction sites, but mil-surp 5.45x39 ammo has been banned from future import because BATF declared it to be armor piercing and someone just had to manufacture a handgun that shot the round.

Then why would you want to get an upper chambered in a caliber that's dang near impossible to find ammo for?

If you want to change calibers, have you considered .300 Blackout? Uses 5.56 magazines, the only thing you have to buy is an upper and the ammo, which is easy to find...

That gun was a prototype that was never produced and that ammo ban was as much of a fabrication as the current one.

Got one of the uppers on a lower of my own production. Works great. 7N6 smells kinda funky (amonia-ish). I bought a pile way back when along with an AK74 so I couldn't resist getting an AR upper in the caliber. The poison bullet does a number on gophers.

Places like CDNN had them for $499...:D
