Pistol caliber carbine

Thinking about a pistol caliber carbine for home defense. Currently, I have pared down to a single handgun caliber, 9mm. I have owned .38/.357 in the past and am a big fan of that caliber as well. I had hand and shoulder surgery and am waiting to see how my dominant hand heals. If it doesn't heal as I hope, holding a handgun becomes difficult and I may have to switch back to a revolver. If that happens, it will definitely be .357 caliber.

In any event, I am vascillating between the Ruger PC9 9mm carbine and the Ruger M77/.357 bolt action.

On the one hand, I like a bolt action. On the other, if I stick with 9mm, I have a carbine that is in the same caliber as my handgun.

Which would you choose and why?

PC9.

The 77/357 is a PIA to load and only takes 5 IIRC. I had one and sold it. I'm a huge fan of 357 but not in a bolt rifle. If I were to buy another 357 rifle I would get a lever gun. That's hard for me to say because I like bolt rifles. I built my own bench rest bolt rifle and shoot it often.

PC9's are very popular, 77/357's not so much. They even discontinued the model for a few years because sales were less than spectacular.

For some reason I like PCC.......

A Beretta CX4 9mm for home defense..... only 29" long,15,18,20 and 30 round factory and Mec-gar magazines are interchangeable with my Beretta 92 Centurion.

Have a Winchester .357 Trapper...... but

for utility at the cabin I go with a stainless/polymer stocked Ruger 77/357 with a Weaver 1-3x20 scope for a 100 yd general purpose long gun..... with .158gr soft points.

This thread inspired me to dig the old gorilla killa out of the safe and unleash some 240 grain JSPs.

I had forgotten how much fun it is to shoot, and how hot it gets!

That is kinda a cute rifle, compact and handy and effective with full-power 158 grain .357 Magnum loads.

This AR-9 started out as a not very satisfactory PSA 9mm carbine. I replaced the upper half with a Rock River Arms upper, a Ballistic Advantage 16" barrel and a Yankee Hill Machine free float tube. I also swapped out the buffer for a 10 oz KAK buffer with sliding tungsten weights to manage the higher velocity loads and eliminate bolt bounce.

Ballistic Advantage guarantees 1 MOA accuracy with match grade ammo, but I didn't expect it with a 9mm Luger barrel. However, I worked up some 9mm loads using 115 gr HAPs and 115 gr XTPs and both loads produce just short of 1600 fps and ragged one hold groups at 50 yards. That's five shots, not three:

It's become my go to pistol caliber carbine.

That’s more than 3 Hi Point 4595’s.
And as much as I love my Camp 9, this is exactly why I bought a HP4595 instead of a Camp 45. And buying used like I did you could buy 3 of the 4595's PLUS about 700-800 rounds of ammo for them for the price of the Camp 45.

I like the PCC9 Ruger but really prefer my Ruger 44 carbine.
