.44 Magnum mid-velocity ammunition ?

And, LAX Ammunition offers a 240 gr. Magnum with a muzzle velocity of 1026 fps.

Thanks. Sounds very similar to the Georgia Arms ammo I have been shooting and is even less expensive. The next time I order ammo for my M69 I am going to give this a try.

240gr @1000fps isn't what I would call mid range. I'd call that weak 44mag/hot 44spl.

I carry Hornady 240gr XTPs in my 29 3". At somewhere between 1275-1350 I would put that more in the mid to mid/high range.

YMMV

About 10 years back I bought some Bitterroot Valley Ammo 240 gr. JHP ammo from a cop shop. I load my own, but the price was right at the time and I bought a few boxes. I chronographed a couple at about 1200 fps from my 6 1/2" model 29. I don't know if they are still in business, but that was a mild shooting round and quite accurate.

Yes, I think that's a fair statement but I like it for a morning of target practice at the range. It doesn't beat me or the revolver up after a box. And, I prefer magnum cartridges to .44 Special, whether wild or mild, so I don't have to clean the additional build-up in the ends of the cylinders. (Also, I have several revolvers chambered for .44 Special. That's one of my favorite rounds to shoot.)

However, I usually end the session with a cylinder of Underwood 240 gr. (1400 fps) or PMC Bronze Line 180 gr. (1750 fps) just to remind me of how a "real" 44 Magnum round feels. :D

It is funny that the general run of the mill .44mag 240gr has the basic ballistics of the ''Keith heavy special'' he lobbied the ammo companies for in the 40s and 50s. 1200fps in a 6 1/2'' and 1100fps in a 4''.

There is a name for .44 Magnum mid-range ammo: .44 Special

Not really.

44 spl runs 240 grains at about 750 fps.

44 mag runs that same weight at 1200 and more.

My loads for the 629 are true mid range loads. About 1000 or 1050 fps, extrapolating from 45 Colt data (I need to chrono).

It's a just-right load.

I'm glad to see that several bargain priced ammo suppliers like Georgia Arms are loading 1000fps practice ammo. The GA loaded in new Starline brass would interest me if I were not a reloader.............
