I picked up this spider co knife at a local pawn shop yesterday. Other than being used as a pry-bar once it is in perfect condition. I don’t know much about them other than the blade steel is very highly regarded and people like the older spider co knives. I just figured for $3 I couldn’t go wrong.

Yup, Spydercos are great knives. I've got some Delica 4 FRNs that I really like.

I can't tell for sure what you've got there, looks like it could be a Delica. Blade should be 3" (with tip... ;) ). If it's longer than that, it's an Endura. The pocket clip on the early models are molded from the grips. The original Delicas, before the plastic handles, had metal panels, I believe.

For $3, I'd say you got a helluva deal. New Delicas are going for somewhere in the neighborhood of $70-80.

If you're handy and have the proper tools, you could probably reprofile the tip if you want. Or there are shops that can do that. I had one of my Delicas reprofiled to more of a semi-Wharncliffe shape and shortened to 2.5".

It has endura molded on the handle and does have the pocket clip molded as well. I work in a tool room so I’ll fix it at some point.

Gotcha. Must've missed that detail when I looked at the photos.

Have to be real careful when buying these as there are many, many counterfeit ones complete with boxes/paperwork. There are several "tells" on the counterfeit ones such as not spelling out Golden, Colorado in the same way as the legit knives (sometimes the Os are capitalized). There are subtle differences in the "spider" logo too both on the knives and the boxes. Screws can be another tell, oddly the better looking screw heads are often the counterfeit. Quite a science to identifying originals from the counterfeit ones; best to buy from an authorized vendor. On the plus side, even the counterfeit ones I've seen are pretty decent knives. Here's a picture of a counterfeit one, also from a pawn shop bought "new, in the box." If the price is a lot better than MSRP, check carefully.

That’s good to know! I know there are Chinese made versions you can get at Walmart for a cheap price. But I was unaware of all out counterfeits. I wouldn’t have bought it if it wasn’t so cheap. I think they just got a box of knives off somebody and priced it cheap because it seems cheap if you don’t know what it is. On the flip side they had a very poorly treated bench made folder that looks like someone tried to sharpen it with a pedestal grinder priced at $89.

These are two of the 25-30 year old 3” Delicas. The one on the right has had its plastic clip replaced with a newer Delica metal clip after the original got snagged too many times and broke off.

It was only a matter of grinding or milling off the rest of the old clip, drilling and tapping holes for the screws, and screwing the new clip on.

Give Spyderco a call at 800-525-7770 and talk to the people in the Factory Outlet about a replacement clip kit. They may send one out to you at no charge.

You may be able to re-profile the tip by grinding the edge from that last large serration up to the spine, then sharpen the very tip as a plain edge.

Thanks for the info. I’m pretty certain whoever had this only used it once and broke it. Then it just sat. The clip is still in tact and the plastic has really little to no defects. When things calm down at work I’ll be able to fix it. But the virus has shop kind of turned on its head right now.

Yep, can't go wrong for $3.

Your Endura is probably made with G-2 Steel, (I can't really tell in the picture,) it was a Japanese steel Spyderco used back in the 90's. If you like the way that steel sharpens and holds an edge for you, two modern steels that are easy to sharpen to a razor edge are BD1N and VG-10. BD1N is an American steel made by Carpenter Technologies and VG-10 is a Japanese steel made by Takefu Special Steel Co. Both are known as a "cutlery" steel that will take a screaming sharp edge fairly easily.

Spyderco uses BD1N and VG-10 on many of their current models of knives.

Spyderco calls their fully serrated edge like you have a "SpyderEdge." Lots of people swear by knives with the SpyderEdge. Claims are that it will easily cut like a plain edge that's about a third longer.

Of course you know that know that you own one you must become the typical, overbearing Spyderco fan who goes around making bold statements about how they're the best thing ever and how any older designs are obsolete while newer designs are gimmicky tacticool trash, right? ;)

You have to wear a Spyderco T-shirt, too. ;)

Ha I guess it’s about like owning a glock. I work with a guy that had picked up a one of the rescues for $6 and one of the reasons I was excited to buy it was to show it to him haha. I bought a new one last year on vacation and the blade on it is cpm30 and that’s the first knife I’ve ever bought that you could shave with.

I never cared much for saw blade knives.Just my opinion.

To quote my dad “I don’t need a pocket knife for cutting bread”
I fee the same way. I mainly just picked it up for what it was and for how cheap it was.

The price was right;) I have a few Spydercos, including one with the fully serrated blade. I've carried a Spyderco LUM daily for I don't know how many years. Good knives IMHO.

Looks exactly like what I've been carrying everyday for more than 20 years. Minus the broken tip. Mine even has the plastic clip.

A sure way to push the button of a knife aficionado is abusing a knife, the higher the value, more outrage. I have seen an adult who knew better snap the blade of a "borrowed for a minute" very pricey Benchmade by using it as a pry bar, it almost came to blows. The person had a Leatherman but "didn't want to mess it up".
