Julie Golob does a better job of introducing the new model:

NEW! S&W M&P 9 Shield Plus | JulieG.TV - YouTube

And, The Truth About Guns (TTAG):

S&W M&P Shield Plus : TTAG Range Review - YouTube

And

NEW! M&P Shield Plus...The Best Shield For Carry? - YouTube

My summary:

Capacity increase is achieved primarily by widening the lower part of the magazine to a true double stack instead of just a staggered capacity. This keeps the top of the magazine thin, so the top end of the gun stays the same as previous editions—including fitting 1.0/2.0 holsters.

The wider grip is actually a plus as it fits most hands better than a straight grip—it fills the palm better. Texture is reduced from 2.0 edition, better than 1.0.

Trigger is vastly improved. No longer hinged or curved. Lighter pull. Audible and tactile reset.

Slightly extended mag release.

Higher capacity mags have tight springs, both for loading and insertion. Slide retraction may be harder due to increased friction from upward pressure of tightly sprung mags.

Slide release (Yes, Virginia, none other than S&W rep Julie Golob called it a release as she used it as a release, like many competitors) remains stiff, but as discussed here many times it can be adjusted through judicious polishing.

Somehow the new gun is slightly lighter when empty, so the carrying weight increase is not huge.

In truth, I see significant but relatively small changes that make this the best Shield yet. It is still so very similar to its beloved predecessors, but better trigger and increased capacity. What’s not to like?

I have fairly large hands and the 9/40 Shields tend to swim around in my hands upon firing. I recently installed a Hogue Grip Sleeve in an attempt to mitigate this issue but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet to see how I like it. One down side to the Hogue Grip Sleeve is that it adds a little bulk and it is a little grabby to covering garments.
As a result, I recently purchased a 2.0 9mm Sub Compact and for me it is a better fit.

It's is truly great to live in a country where we still have choices to buy/use what fits us best. The new Shield Plus will fit into the size gap between the Shield and the Sub Compacts.

I want one yesterday! Carried a shield for years. Easy to shoot and very reliable. I only carry a 43x now because I wanted extra capacity.

Other than magazine capacity (13+1; 10+1), are there any other differences between the new Shield and the 2.0 subcompact?

The trigger is completely different and in my opinion a vast improvement

I carried a Shield 1.0 for a long time and felt like it was a very reliable and compact EDC gun, but have since moved on to my Hellcat and absolutely love it! I appreciate what Smith and Wesson have done to the Shield, but I definitely won't be going back from my Hellcat.

Trigger, barrel. Not big difference in grip width.
If I would have to choose - I'd go with M&P M2.0 SUB, add Apex trigger and forget about Shield Plus.
I have short barrels, sticking up like medieval cannon once the slide locks back

Hoping they'll add the 40 and 45 options to the Plus line. Buds had the 9mm in stock already this morning. They aren't really competition to the P365 and Hellcat but should compete nicely with the Glock 43X and new Ruger Max 9.

It's not something I'm interested in. The change to the width of the grip frame makes it too big for typical pocket carry (I pocket carry a Kahr PM-9). While S&W and the others with similar size guns (Sig, Ruger, Glock) tout the width of the slide, the slide isn't the widest part of the gun.

That means that the Shield Plus would be a belt holster gun. If I have to carry it on my belt, then I'll carry a larger gun that's easier to handle like an M&P 2.0 Compact or Subcompact.

Weight.

The S&W website says the Shield plus is 17.9 ounces vs. 25 for the 9mm subcompact. But they are inconsistent about whether the weight includes the magazine so one or both of those numbers might be a couple of ounces light.

It depends on your body and how you carry but for me weight makes a bigger difference than the extra thickness. When I tried carrying my 2.0 compact it was only tolerable with a stiff and uncomfortable gun belt. My Glock 43 carries well with a more flexible belt which makes it much more comfortable. I am 5'11'', about 170 pounds and carry IWB at 4:00.

I installed the Hogue grip on my Gen 1 Shield and it changed everything for me in accuracy and comfort. I'd like to check out the new Shield Plus, but I'll never get rid of my Gen 1 Shield.

I handled a new Shield Plus at a gun shop yesterday. It felt good, slightly bigger but not alot. I couldn't try the trigger of course but it looks good.
They had it priced at $499. They said they got 6 in and already sold 4 of them. Of the 6, only one didn't have a frame safety, the other 5 had the safety. I wouldn't be surprised if I went back later today and the last 2 are gone.

Got to play with one today, the triggers are vastly different and not just in appearance. The new Plus trigger and previous elbow aren't even comparable in feel. The new one is far 'superior'.

Where in the world do you shop that you can't try the trigger?

It was probably that retarded big box store Field and Stream Stores, which is slowly moving away from guns, after being purchased by Dick's Sporting stores.

Got my Shield Plus yesterday.

I never really liked the shape of the Shield grips, too long and flat (skinny) for my liking. Still, I couldn't resist the Shield 45 in spite of that minor discomfort and had to have one. I put a Hogue Handall rubber slip-on grip on it and it helped.

The new Plus grip is perfect for me as is. It is just enough fatter to fill my palm and feels just about perfect as is. The older Shield grips still feel like a board in my hand, but of course every hand is different. The Shield Plus grip just works for me.

One problem I've found with the gun is that the 13 round magazine is almost impossible to get that 13th round in.

Anybody else hear of that?
