Last night I went on a buying spree. Got a holster and belt for my new gun, plus a pair of grips for it and a pair for my 1911, plus some fancy grip screws and a small tin of Ren wax. I wanted to buy more, but I couldn't find what I wanted except from mom and pop leatherworkers on Etsy or Ebay. Not sure I trust them.
What I'm looking for is an all leather pair of suspenders with a hook system similar to the Perry system but with metal hardware. I don't want any elastic as this is for my western rig and I want it to be period looking. So, I thought I'd see if one of the members here would take on a custom job. Ever since I got older and my *** moved to my belly, I need to do something extra to keep my pants up. With the extra leather and a gun hanging there I believe I need more help.

Thomas Hancock invented elastic in 1820.

Modern elastic suspenders were first popularised as "braces" in 1822 by a London haberdasher Albert Thurston.

Samuel Clemens, known for his work as the author Mark Twain, patented "Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments" (ADSG), becoming one of the first to receive a United States patent for suspenders in 1871.

Period suspenders were also made from non-elastic bands of cotton, linen, or wool.

Although I did limited research, I find no mention of leather as a suspender material in the 1850-1900 period.

My mistake. Didn't know it went that far back. Still not what I have in my mind though, and I'd still need to come up with the hooks. Might buy a set to use as a pattern though. Might have to do it a couple of times to get it right, though. Hmmm. Got some ponderin' to do.
Thanks for the help!:)

Thanks everyone, but I think I'm gonna make my own. That way I get what I want and I can upgrade to fancier hardware. like I said, gonna have to work out a system for the hooks anyway. And I'll probably do a pants belt and a knife sheath too. That way it will all match. Hopefully. Got the leather and the tools hanging around, might as well use them.

Please post some pictures when you finish.
Likely take me some time. Just ordered the holster and belt and they say 6-8 weeks for delivery. In the meantime I can work on the suspenders, pants belt and knife sheath. Also I have a couple guns that need holsters. Might build instead of buy. But I'll definitely post pics.

You might want to do a little more research, I don’t believe belt loops on pants came about until the early 1900s. So, not the era for you.

John Wayne wore pants with belt loops. If it's good enough for the Duke.....

Yeah but unfortunately they all have elastic in the back. I'm sure it works better, but I'm going for period.:) But thank you. I appreciate the help.:)

Contradicting yourself, but, why not it is your thread.

Kevin
