Traded in to a box of Grizzly Cartridge Co .41 mag ammo, loaded with a 250gr lead gc bullet. Its printed on the the box 1325 fps. That seems awful stout. Looked them up on the internet. Couldent find any .41 mag on their sight.
Does anyone have any experiance or information about these loads ?
Im a bit hesitant to shoot them out of my 57. They are loaded in Starline brass.

My guess is that it's just not a caliber they load anymore. It's a boutique company i.e. CorBon, Underwood etc. It's good ammo & yes, they load theirs 'up'!
 
I use their Cast Performance .410 bullets, usually the 265 grain gas check hard cast. It works well in my 657-2 Classic Hunter. I am curious how their loaded ammo performs.
 
I had some of that same ammo. I did not shoot it in my 57. I shot one round in a Ruger Blackhawk. It was very "stout". I shoot a 250 gr WFNGC bullet in my 57. at about 1000-1050 FPS...4 inch. It shot all the way through a large moose and a grizz front to back. Also, through an elk side to side. I don't think we need more performance than that. I gave the fellow that bought the Ruger the rest of the box. I didn't need the extra recoil in the 57. BTW I think the gun will handle the load. I just think it puts a bit of strain on 'em.
 
Yes, they're pretty stout. A friend of mine that happened to own a LGS & in-door shooting range gave me a box of that ammo knowing I favored the .41 mag. It seems that another customer had ordered them and never came back to pick them up.
I shot them in my Blackhawk. They were certainly stout - I didn't feel the need to try and duplicate the load! LOL!
My normal loads run in the 1,000 - 1,100 fps. range. I cast the Lyman 220 gr. (#410459) Keith style SWC and it that velocity range they're both accurate and effective.

Well, as a reference the Hodgdons START Load for a 250gr WFNGC bullet using 296 @ 17.4gr gives almost 1,400fps with pressure under 30K CUP...

Their MAX is significantly higher...:eek:

I dont know how Hodgdon gets those results...... I load 22 gr H110 and a 210 JHP and get 1325fps across my chronograph. I looked up their data out of curiosity. They show my load getting over1600 fps..... Anyways I appreciate every ones responces. If I decide to shoot them I'll post the results.
 
I don't remember buying any of their ammo but I did buy many of bullets from their sister company Cast Performance.

They are a hunting cartridge company similar to Garrett Cartridges but with more products.

I really like CP's wide flat nose cast bullets. (WFNGC bullets)
Unfortunately since Grizzly Cartridges merged with Cast Performance some of my favorite bullets have been discontinued. They don't even have their own WEB site any longer and everything goes through the Grizzly site.

I do know a few hunters who use their ammo and they are very happy with the performance. They are loaded hot, hotter than commercial ammo would be but they are meant for hunting after all.

If you like that bullet and you reload it is still available as a component.

P.S. Where do they get these weird test barrel lengths (i.e., 10" for 357 Magnum, etc.) and WHY?

I would guess they choose the barrel length that will produce the results they want. They aren't reporting inaccurate information, they just cause the results to be what they want. Many people don't look at what barrel length was used in the tests. (all IMO of course)
 
Well a 10" bbl is a bit longer, but I still have question their results. I mean as example... A 250 grn bullet with 17.4 grns of 296 giving almost 1400 fps ??

Well I doubt they will "blow up" a 57. They would be responsible. But I too, at one time, pushed the envelope. I found for much handgun hunting with lead bullets heavy for caliber bullets truly worked well usually putting two big holes in the critter. I also found that the velocity really didn't matter as long as it was reasonable. I shot a lot of deer with crop damage permits. Got to the point of shooting many with revolvers and Contenders. I shot more than 50 with a 180 gr 357 bullet from a Contender in 357 Max. Every one was a one shot kill every bullet exited and none traveled more than 25 yds. Undoubtedly whitetail deer are not big animals but they are tenacious...when hit badly. The moose I shot with the 41 250 WFNGC bullet took 3 steps and was down. The elk jumped forward about 20 ft and went down before I could shoot again. I have chrono'd the load out of my 4 inch 57. Averaged 1055 and it is an easy shooter with some but not horrendous recoil or blast that you get with many heavy loads with mag handguns. I shot an elk with a 454 Casull and it was DRT too but I truly decided I didn't need a 454 as my more pleasant to shoot 41 worked just fine.

just had to add even with the contender scope sighted about the longest shot was 75 yds. Revolvers longest was maybe 100 ft. The moose was 20 ft

Oh, Elmer Keith used to shoot heavier loads than that.

Of course, his were mostly guesswork in the early days.

He never said he blew anything up.

I have seen firsthand some that did blow up. Not mine, but people who were shooting when I was there. Model 10, 19, 29, 686, 629. it doesn't happen too often, but it can. These were the kind where the top 3 chambers were gone, and the topstrap was gone or peeled back.
 
I've seen a few blown guns. In fact have a Python shot one round. Reload. Never have seen one blown with any factory load...Well one but it was the shooters fault. First was a squib. Revolver came apart. The Python? loaded with 296 powder. I took one round from the 3 left in the 1/2 cylinder. Pulled apart. The darn thing had a load 1/2 or less what it should have had. And NO. It wasn't mine and I wasn't the shooter. He was a New reloader though!
 
I had not heard of this brand until recently. Several types at one LGS. Revolver cals. .38, .44spl., 44mag. All expensive, will not pay $40 for 50rds of .38s.
 
As far as Elmer I think he did write that they had more than one self destruct. But they were using 1st Generation Colts and others
 
Those high velocities were most likely achieved in pressure test barrels. They will always exceed what can be achieved in a revolver.

I’ve been shooting 41 Mags for a long time. I used to read these high velocities achieved with the cartridge and believed what I read. Then I got a chronograph and have never been able to reach those published velocities I believed I had been getting. It seems to me that this occurred more with the 41 than other cartridges.

I would have NO reservations shooting Grizzly ammo in my S&W 41 Mags. It’s not going to blow the gun up. I also think, while using a lot of it might accelerate wear, it would take a LOT to do that as well as a lot of money. In my opinion the S&W 41 would handle it better than same in 44 Mag.

I have loaded CP 265 WLNGC in my 41’s and penetration is quite impressive. My velocity is 1324 fps, similar to Buffalo Bore.
