McCartney bought the bass, featured on the Beatles first two records, for about $37 in 1961. It was stolen in 1972

Story here.

A five-year search by the manufacturer of the instrument that was aided by a husband-and-wife team of journalists helped reunite The Beatles star with the distinctive violin-shaped 1961 electric Höfner that went missing a half century ago and is estimated to be worth 10 million pounds ($12.6 million).

McCartney had asked Höfner to help find the missing instrument that helped launch Beatlemania across the universe, Scott Jones, a journalist who teamed up with Höfner executive Nick Wass to track it down, said Friday...

...“Because I was left-handed, it looked less daft because it was symmetrical,” McCartney once said. “I got into that. And once I bought it, I fell in love with it."

The instrument was returned to McCartney in December and then it took about two months to authenticate it...

The National Post article actually includes the interesting details about the recovery. This is not true of other articles and YouTubes on the subject.
The article was quite detailed. I usually check a few other articles to find the best info and that one was pretty good. The only thing they didn't show was a pic of the actual guitar! There was another another very clear B&W closeup pic of him playing it back around '62 but I can't find it now.

There are still a few out there that haven't been recovered...at least to my knowledge.

George Harrison's 1965 Rickenbacker
Eric Clapton's Les Paul..."Beano"
Jeff Beck's '59 Les Paul
Roseanne Cash's vintage 1948 Martin D-28
James Jamerson's Funk Machine Fender Precision bass
Mike Nesmith's custom-made Gretsch 12-string

There are probably a few more stolen guitars out there that I haven't listed. The thing that puzzles me is why somebody would steal a "famous" guitar, knowing full well that they couldn't do anything with it without somebody recognizing it. Of course, most thieves aren't noted for their high mental capabilities.

In the case of PMC's guitar, that's explained in the article. The others, who knows? "The truth is out there..."
