Nothing earth shattering here but I have a question. It took 5 weeks to get a letter. My revolver went to J.W. Storrs Co, NYC on Jun 16, 1865 as part of 75 units. Nickel finish and 6-inch barrel with rosewood grips confirmed. Engraving and ivory grips were not factory and were probably added by Storrs for a customer. The Storrs connection was not unexpected but the date it was shipped to them by the factory is - just two months after the Civil War ended!? I have seen guesses for the last serial numbers for Civil War era Model 2s being at approx. 30,000? SCSW 3rd edition shows 1865 production cutoff at 48475. Clearly that is wrong given my revolver but this might have been rectified in later editions? Is there a revised serial number ceiling for Civil War model 2s?
Also, hopefully this will help anyone, with a close serial number, approximate a date for their Model 2.
The photo is my ode to post Civil War Westward expansion.
best John

I can't find any reference to your serial #
can you share it? even redacted

I have a rather extensive database compiled by Joe Miller and kept on the old Yahoo SWCA forum years ago, for the Model 2s and have stated that the latest serial number shipped before the Civil War ended was right around 35,000. Two 35,000 guns shipped in March, so technically could have been received before April. All later numbers shipped after April 9, 1865.

Serial 49247.

I wonder if they were shipped out of order as later models were.
14,000 shipped in two months (35,000-49,000) seems unlikely given that the war was over

I wonder if they were shipped out of order as later models were . . .

Serial number order in the database also shows that these guns shipped as soon as completed up to the end of the war. After 1865 they became more random. Likely big demand for soldiers during the war era and likely too many made after the war ended.

So, should I contact Mr Mundell to get a recheck on my serial number? And, if so, how would I do this. Fill out another form?

All I can say is that guns in your serial number range, in the database I have, all shipped in late 1865. if yours shipped in June, at the end of the Civil War, there would have had to be 49,000 guns already manufactured? The company did have a large inventory storage area and some models would accumulate in storage from time to time. The company typically grabbed the guns in the front row since they did not ship in serial number order. By December of that year, they were still shipping guns in your serial number range, so it seems unlikely that there would be 10,000 Model 2s in inventory at the end of the Civil War???

Thank you for the responses! Interesting information! I have asked Mr. Mundell to check the date, just to be certain.
