Anyone shop at TrueValue Hardware?

Shop both Aces in my town, both privately owned. Best service and selection of parts and tools of any chain outfit. One is for sale, maybe closed as the third generation owner died without a family member claiming it. The second, the closest, has it's third generation owner still there (a guy and his wife whom I've known for over 50 years).

DoItBest is a good label. They will honor their name if they keep the Ace family stores open and support them.

True Value does not own any of the stores! None of them are closing because of this. They will just rebrand as Do-It or they could go Ace. These are really like "buying groups" where all the store does is agree to buy X% of their merchandise from the brand. Kind of like the small hotels. Holiday Inn, Comfort, La Quinta, they re-brand all the time.

No True Value stores here. I thought they were out of business. The last one here closed many years ago. I still remember Paul Harvey doing the True Value commercials - That's. well, that's TRUE VALUE.

There are several Ace hardware stores - some excellent and some not so much. There is also one Do It Best hardware / lumberyard. I like the good Ace stores better than the Do It Best.

I'm not sure how they do business now,but a friend bought a True Value in 92. He was out of it by 2000 due to the national sales. He would pay True Value $4.00 for a plastic bucket and it would go on sale for $2.00,can't stay in business at that rate. He was in a small town of 4,000,with an Ace Hardware in town also.

Used to have a True Value 1/2 a mile from here. It went away about 10-15 years ago. Became a microbrewery. Used to be a good hardware store.

I would consider a microbrewery an upgrade............ :D

True Value will soon be the way of Western Auto, Sears & a host of others, I'm afraid.

Walgreens announced they are also about to dump a load of stores due to 'low retail sales'. With prices these days, I'm not entirely shocked.

Not completely correct.

Those stores are closing due to constant mass theft. CA even has signs reminding thieves to keep the value below ($1,000 or some such) maximum so as to not getting prosecuted.

Ok, for those who didn't read the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say, True Value sold out to a competitor who's intent-at press time-was to be the new supplier to the True Value stores. Now, the question is, will the quality of goods be the same?

We've got one True Value in the local area and it has stuff Ace doesn't. At least it has had stuff Ace doesn't. The local REAL hardware store that'd been in business for 100 or so years got driven out of business by the big box stores some time back.

Between $500 million and $1 billion in total debt liabilities? I wonder how that stuck up on them? The big box stores and doing to local mom & pop hardware stores what Walmart has done to the local mom & pop department stores.

I have shopped there on occasion and in the recent past. While their prices are usually sky high, they usually will have a wider selection of specialized nuts, bolts, parts, etc. Recently I needed four 3/4" stainless steel machine bolts in a very specific length (3.25" I believe). After being disappointed at Lowes & Home Depot my last resort was to try True Value. They did have them and I paid over $34 buck for 4 bolts, washers and nuts.

I also had a very specific key to make copies of for our mailbox. Both Lowes and H-D could not duplicate it - so I went to True Value. They had the key and charged me more than twice the normal price, but hey I got what I needed.

True Value give you better customer service, has more knowledgable employees, has a better selection and sometimes better quality but this is pretty much a well known thing . People usually shop at True Value onlyy when they can not get what they want at the discount Home Center stores. Unfortunately and because of this they do not do enough steady business to stay financially healthy. At least this is how I see it.

I am an old fashioned Hardware Store lover and could spend hours and hours just looking and shopping in the old stores. They are all but gone as they can not compete with the mega Home Stores now. The Home stores usually carry imported junk, cheap goods and have an all but limited selection. While I have gone and still do go into True Value on occasion, if I am not in a rush I will order what I need from McMaster - Carr, Zoro Tool or a more specialized sellers. I am a person who does not like to settle and want what I want. I am sometimes (many times) willing to pay a premium for that choice of quality. Will I miss True Value? Maybe once or twice a year. It's really difficult to compete successfully with Home Depot & Lowes!

The local True Value's been my go-to for years. Prices competitive with Lowes and Home Depot, along with a staff that's accessible, knowledgeable, and knows where stuff is. Hopefully, the new regime won't change things too much, but I can't help but remember the Sears/KMart debacle.
