The country general store just a mile or two from our farm has a really good but small hardware section. It's designed for the 'cabin people' that infest our area. The hardware variety is wide but not deep, aiming to have a couple of everything you might need to repair/replace common household failures and burn-outs. They also have an official if walk-in closet-sized post office. A couple of villages over has a big, family-owned, old-fashioned hardware store which still lets you mix a bag of various fasteners/screws/bolts/nails and pay by the pound.
