Santa brought a single shot rifle, just two days late!
My latest single shot rifle was just delivered two days ago, Dec. 27. Yes, Santa was two days late, but the new toy was worth the wait.
The rifle is a German kipplauf made by Franz Kettner that was proofed in Suhl in March, 1939. It's chambered in 8x60RS Mauser.
I have been busy making ammunition by converting Norma 9.3x74R cases to the proper configuration.
Here are some photos. You can click for larger renditions.
First, from the auction listing:
Unfortunately, the above photos show this lovely rifle with dried oil accumulated over the years. I have carefully cleaned it off.
Here are a couple of photos from my Samsung phone taken yesterday and this morning.
The cartridge shown above is my prototype, a "dummy" round.
This morning I loaded my first ten "try-out" loads, which can be seen in the next photo.
Finally, here is a photo of an unaltered 9.3x74R case (on left) beside my "dummy" round (on right). You can see that it requires considerable modification, but it is a fine result.
Yes, it would be more convenient if chambered in 8x57RS, for which brass is readily available, but the treaty of Versailles forbade that. To the good, though, the 8x60RS has better ballistics.
The weather here is horrible today, so shooting will be put off until tomorrow or later.
