Santa brought a single shot rifle, just two days late!

My latest single shot rifle was just delivered two days ago, Dec. 27. Yes, Santa was two days late, but the new toy was worth the wait.

The rifle is a German kipplauf made by Franz Kettner that was proofed in Suhl in March, 1939. It's chambered in 8x60RS Mauser.

I have been busy making ammunition by converting Norma 9.3x74R cases to the proper configuration.

Here are some photos. You can click for larger renditions.

First, from the auction listing:

Unfortunately, the above photos show this lovely rifle with dried oil accumulated over the years. I have carefully cleaned it off.

Here are a couple of photos from my Samsung phone taken yesterday and this morning.

The cartridge shown above is my prototype, a "dummy" round.

This morning I loaded my first ten "try-out" loads, which can be seen in the next photo.

Finally, here is a photo of an unaltered 9.3x74R case (on left) beside my "dummy" round (on right). You can see that it requires considerable modification, but it is a fine result.

Yes, it would be more convenient if chambered in 8x57RS, for which brass is readily available, but the treaty of Versailles forbade that. To the good, though, the 8x60RS has better ballistics.

The weather here is horrible today, so shooting will be put off until tomorrow or later.

This is my favorite single shot rifle. It is a Winchester 52D with a Lyman SuperTargetspot 25X scope mounted. The target was shot with this setup. It is now wearing Redfield International MK 8 iron sights, will take a picture of it tomorrow for show and tell. It shoots as good with the irons as it does with a scope. The two attached targets were shot over a year apart.

Those are a hoot. When you shoot them at the range, everyone expects to hear boom when it goes off. However, all you get is a pop!

This belongs to a friend (not to far from Jebus and Strawhat). There are 32 Winchester 52's (of which are 10 D's & E's), Also about the same amount of Remington 40X's, Martini's, Walther's and various European single shots. Lots of toys.

I have a Ruger No1 in 7x57. That is the same chamber as 275 Rigby, but the Rigby is 154 gr, Semi Spitzer at almost 400 fps faster. IN the No1 with the sights for 175 RN Mauser, it is 4" low at 50 yards. My No1 is zeroed at 100 yards for the Rigby load. Norna used to duplicate it, but I haven't seen any listed for several years. My 300 factory rounds + reloads will have to do!

My No1 7 x57 sports a 3x9 Bushnell Banner from the early 60's. That's too cheap of scope for such a classy gun but this one rivels the 3x9 Compact Leupold I used to, so it stays.

I consider this gun to be the perfect "Stalking" rifle, and a great candidate for "If I could only have one rifle" discussions!

Lot of beautiful rifles showing up here, seems the S&W guys have good taste. Hope we see some more.

AJ, your friend has a super gun collection of rifles. Did you mention Martini or German rifles? Larry

Larry,

He has four or five Martini's a MK II, a MK III and a MK IV and a couple of 12/15's, He has at least one Walther and a couple of Anschutz. Most of those came from me after I was done playing with them.

AJ

You guys who enjoy heavy target .22 rifles are speaking my language too. I have several and probably will snag a couple more. I lack a good Martini, and seeing the ones posted in this thread make me want one all the more.

Here's my Rem. 40X:

Sometimes I shoot it with glasses on, but mostly I like the irons. Here it has a 2" Unertl 20x.

Finally, some of the ammo I was shooting that day:

P.S. You can call me a cheater if you want, but I'm not really a bad person. Just a slight cheat, because I'm sneaking a photo of a repeater in this single shot thread. My beloved Winchester 52C.

I almost never shoot it with a scope, but this is the photo I was able to find on my computer.

One more for now, and back to the straight and narrow with a classic single shot rifle. Here are some photos of my Winchester High Wall Winder Musket. This one is .22LR and never has had the embarrassment of a telescope.

It has a perfect bore and is superbly accurate.

That was a dead calm morning, just at daybreak, with a slight drizzle off and on.

That rifle does love RWS R50.

What a wonderful rifle!

While I'm at it this morning, let me remind you of my little Alexander Henry single shot rifle I posted on these forums a couple years ago.

I won't re-post those photos, but here's a link to that thread. Although it's older, additional comments are welcome there.

Well . . . one photo for a tease:

Another link. I don't mean to distract from this thread, but this is a link to what is probably my favorite single shot of my collection. I posted it on these forums over 12 years ago. New comments are welcome there also.

I love this rifle. I just shot it in an off-hand sporting rifle match this past spring.
