American Airlines Jet Midair Crash Into Blackhawk

The airline has confirmed 60 passengers and 4 crew on a CRJ700 and the army has said three on board the Blackhawk. I've seen a video of the collision, and my view is that either ATC or the helicopter pilot have some explaining to do. Given that the Blackhawk pilot is likely dead, we shall just have to hear what ATC has to say for itself.

Seems there are no survivors. Both aircraft are in 7 feet of water. News conference beginning in 5 minutes.

News conference began 1155 PM CST. No real news, mainly just platitudes, except a spokesperson stated that the operation was still in “rescue” mode. No information was provided about recovery of any victims, nor rescues of any survivors. Airport will remain closed until about 11 AM local on Thursday morning.

A horrible and most certainly a preventable event. The passenger jet was operated by American Airlines' PSA subsidiary. In an ironic twist, in 1978, another PSA jet collided in mid-air with a Cessna over a residential neighborhood on approach to San Diego's Lindbergh Field, killing 144. All aboard the two aircraft died, plus 7 on the ground. At the time, it was the worst U.S. aviation disaster. I flew the original PSA many times. It was a great airline. It's sad that both the original PSA and its successor have had such similar tragedies vested upon them.

Go on line to Wall Street journal News site. Lots of information including flight path of both. Looks like the jet was on final approach from se and Blackhawk on trading mission flying down the Potomac.

Very sad for all aboard. My brother is a retired Delta Captain and his son is first officer on that type of jet.

A tragedy! Unfortunately there are and always will be accidents with ANY form of transportation - no way around that. The trick is to strive for 100% complete safety and try and keep the actual accidents to as low as possible.

For the amount of flights we have in this Country every day and hiring of ATC's who in some cases could use more training and higher levels of qualification in some cases, it's a miracle the death toll is as low as it is.

My oldest daughter is a Rad Tech at a hospital in Alexandrea and got called in just prior to the crash for a trauma where a mother and her four year old daughter were struck by a car. The mom died and she was in the OR when they called it. She was getting ready to head home when the crash happened and they began bringing victims to the area hospitals. I woke up this morning to a flurry of texts in our family group chat about it. It’s pretty gruesome and I’ll leave it at that. God rest the souls of all the unfortunate victims and may they rest in peace. I pray for my daughter; at 23, she has seen more suffering and death than most will see their entire life.

The two things you hope never happen. You get THAT call to report for a mass casualty incident. The second one is you arrive, and there is nothing you can do. :(

Sounds like the helicopter crossed the path of the plane that was coming in for a landing. Seems like more responsibility would fall on the helicopter pilot, but it all needs to be investigated.

So sad everyone died.

I just watched coverage briefly last night. There was mention that the helo "was on a training flight". OK, exactly what "training" gets done in the flight space of a major airport?????????

Blurb this morning suggest flight crew had night vision. This limits field of view and distorts depth perception. Again, why in that airspace?

More likely the Jet was under it's approach, not unusual at night despite all modern nav aids.

Who notes the media will blame anyone but the airline, $$ talks and they exist to sell commercials. I expect to see a LOT of airline commercials in the next three months.
