Just a question for you Forum shooters...which method do you prefer?

Whenever I practice at the range, I typically add in a few Mozambique drills (aka "2 to the body, 1 to the head"). Lately however, after reading some articles on its effectiveness, I added what I call the Mozambique 2.0. It's a variation where I shoot "2 to the body, one to the pelvis". There are some compelling reasons why to shoot the pelvis (larger and easier to hit than a head shot; tends to drop the perp to the ground quickly; gets around any body armor). But I understand that there are good reasons for head shots, too. I'm sure that this will stir the pot on this type of defensive shooting, but I just thought I'd ask for some comments.

Oh, I am reminded of a time when I took my mom to the range so that she could practice with her newly acquired Model 640-1. With a B9 target, she put the first round into the groin area of that target and that was at 25 yards! The remainder went into the vital organs area. I'm guessing that had that been a serious encounter, the first shot would have been the only shot required.

Pelvic girdle shots are a good alternative to head shots for threats wearing armor. Larger target area when compared to the head, and generally less movement in relation to total target area.

Pelvic shots will not provide the immediate CNS shut down of a head shot, but structural damage can put the threat on the ground, significantly hindering their ability to continue the fight.

It's a viable tactic, and something that is being taught more in LE circles than it was a few years ago.

All three of my daughters have CCW permits and carry J frame revolvers. I’ve drilled into their heads that if they are attacked by a man, it ain’t because he wants your money/jewelry/iphone etc.

I’ve taught them to aim for the crotch and keep pulling the trigger. The recoil will take care of the rest.

LOL! Some great responses! After a pelvic shot, I would be glad that the attacker was down, and I wouldn't be too worried about him still being able to shoot back unless he was in my house. With the attacker down, I would be getting the heck out of Dodge...I never intend or plan to be involved in a drawn out gun battle.

Portland (OR) police taught that to their officers in the 1980's. As stated, it avoids most body armor and is easier to hit than the head. Additionally, the skull can and often does deflect pistol bullets; the abdomen is easily penetrated and is mostly fluid (if you believe in hydrostatic shock below Mach 2). But the big reason for PPB teaching this was/is, a round that misses the head continues for a couple blocks, which ain't good, especially in an urban environment. A round that misses or penetrates the abdomen is in most cases headed for the ground almost immediately.

As part of our very good church security team qualification, a direct copy of the police qualification, we shoot 2 to the body, 1 to the pelvis two times at 5 yds, from the holster in 4 seconds. We also shoot a regular Mozambique at 3-7 yds. We are also advocating not wasting time on center mass shots when close enough to make a head shot.

I do not advocate for either. I just use what I was taught in USMC Battalion Schools on a course of fire that was developed by the Corps & Jeff Cooper. Two to the chest and one to the head has been pounded into me for so many years that if I am reacting under stress that is where the rounds are going. Pelvis shots are good if you want to incapacitate/immobilize someone. If I am in that situation I am not looking to immobilize the attacker. If he is truly bent on stopping you then a pelvis shot is not going to stop the attacker unless he looses his weapon in the process. As long as he has a gun he is a threat. I use to tell my students "If he dies in the process of this. "Oh well, he started it!"
When put in the situation (a gunfight) most people will fall back on their training, some will freeze, but most will go automaticlly to their training.

A data point of one. Anecdotal at best.

In Iraq, a member of the unit I was with shot a bad guy in the pelvis. Round deflected straight down and all of the individual's blood cascaded out of his body from the exit wound. All aggressive action stopped at the shot. He was dead by the time somebody made it up to check on him. This was a 5.56 round, so more damaging than a handgun.

Since then, I have considered the pelvis a viable target.

My wife asked me to go over shooting basics with a work friend of hers that is married to her second husband, but always carries a snubby in her purse because of the first husband. Her (2nd) hubby came with her to the range and after going over a lot of basics like cleaning a gun, local laws, etc., I took her up towards the target. I told her whatever she does, do NOT close her eyes (yes, she's that type), and aim for body mass and pull the trigger. In a split second, she closed her eyes and emptied the 5 shots into the groin area, no more than 2" diameter! I said, Holy S$#@ and turned back to see the husband on his knees holding his crotch with his eyes bigger than silver dollars. I wiped the gun down, reloaded it, and told them to be careful. Session over.!!!!
