NEW 629 and 686 NO LOCK MOUNTAIN GUNS ANNOUNCED!

These look great. I would like to see the old cylinder latch release too.

Now, most importantly, is the QC going to match the product? All the hype is worthless if you need to send it back after the first range session

Please post the results of the cylinder gap measurement when you have the time .
Thanks

My example came with an even 0.008” cylinder gap on all chambers. I own a lot of other pre lock S&W, many unfired, and this one is built as well as my other ones.

Took it out shooting close to dust yesterday. Shot exactly 10 rounds before it was too dark.

My load of 240 grains coated Elmer Keith bullets and 19.5 grains AA9 is nice and controllable on my 6” Anaconda. But it was a beast in this 4” thinner-barreled Mountain Gun. A bit too much for plinking Magnum fun.

I’ll be creating a lighter but still Magnum load for this gun.

Will take it out again today to continue the testing, this time with the Bear Hug stocks.

The size and contour of the Bear Hug stocks are very similar to that of the Culinas. Not too small and great Coke bottle contouring.

For the folks who are finding these, I see the mention of LGS's... When I go online, nobody has them in stock, not Sportsmans Warehouse, Scheels, Cabelas, Impact Guns, Gunbroker... Did you guys all preorder them?

I called my LGS last week looking for one and they had placed a request for these but did not know when they were going to be delivered.

I found mine by total accident at a local range's shop on Friday. Went in for a HK USP and noticed they had one on display. They only had one for $1121 plus taxes. They should start showing up more frequently soon.

Some of the bigger dealers know that they're going to get at least one of a high-demand item relatively early on.

Some LGS just put in an order and hope that they get one, so luck factors in as well. I've got an Spec Series V M&P Metal HD (steel frame, limited run) on it's way to an LGS; the shop owner said, 'I don't know when or if I'll get one, so if you see one for a good price, just order it.'

My recommendation is to regularly go to gun.deals or wikiarms, search the SKU numbers (14040 for 686 Plus MG, 14041 for 629 MG) to see if anything is in stock at various dealers, and ideally, not marked up over MSRP.

My understanding with the new MGs is that they're not limited run items. You may just need to wait. The UC guns were getting marked up in February 2024, and were easy to find at discounts 6-7 months later.

Some of it is just lucky timing. I got my 642UC for MSRP shipped shortly after release when I ran a gun.deals search at about midnight on a Friday night. It probably would've sold by Monday afternoon, if not Saturday.

If you're set on the 686 Plus MG, it doesn't look like they've gotten in to people's hands yet. That may change in a week, of course.

Yeah, the 686MG and the Model 10 are the two that are calling out to me. Enough that I may even sell my new 19-10 that is in the waiting period. And I agree, they have said these MG's are not a limited run, so I will likely have to be patient. I'm hoping to find a Model 10 in a store, so I can check it out in person before buying, but luckily it looks like it is already out there in much bigger numbers than the 44MG.

Well, we all have our likes & dislikes.

But the lug adds weight to keep the muzzle flip as low as possible. It also adds stiffness to the bbl, also altering the harmonics to a more positive side of the ledger.

But with 50 years being with or around guns, your opinion on the lug is the first time I've heard that. I don't intend that as a slam of any sort, just stating a fact on my part. We all like what we like, IMO.

While I don't think the full lug barrels are "disgusting", I definitely don't like them. When the L frames came out, I shot several and didn't like the balance. I was able to buy several at police price and passed them on to friends.

The only full lug barreled revolver I ever owned for more than a week was a M16-4. I would have liked it more if it had had a half lug barrel.

If I can scrape together the funds, I will buy a M686 Mountain Gun.

Midway USA had the new no lock 629 MG’s available this morning and I ordered one. It was the first time I’d seen it not above MSRP. Glad I ordered it, cause it went out of stock not long after. I already have a tracking number.

Here’s hoping it is as good as the new no-lock Model 19-10 I got a couple months ago, and I don’t get a poorly QC’d mess.

This is primarily, almost exclusively, going to be a .44 Special-level load launcher for me.

Does the Lipseys 686 Mountain Gun really exist? I still can't find one anywhere. Did they only make a couple to tease us with in videos and at trade shows?

It shows on Smith and Wesson’s website, but when you click “buy now” on gunbroker it shows none. My own guess is that either they are waiting to see how the 629 does, or they have run into a production issue. I think we will eventually be seeing them, just not yet. All of the new no-locks seem to be rolling out in pretty small numbers.

I was told they are shipping soon after the first batch of 629’s. My 629 showed up a month later than initially anticipated. Hopefully we see the 686 shortly.

In coming Mountain Gun

I’m really looking forward to the Lipsey’s new
2025 S&W Mdl 686 Plus Mountain Gun
357Rem Mag 7 shot. MFG MDL #: 14040.

I got two on order. They will be great additions
to my Mountain Gun collection.

One Local Gun Shop I missed the Lipsey’s new 2025
S&W Mdl 629 Mountain Gun 44Rem Mag 6 shot in
the morning last Friday.

Once I get word the 357mag M.G. is in I’ll get the
Black Synthetic Rubber one piece grips on order.
They will extend my range shooting by a lot.

The Best to all and your Mountain Gun Endeavors.

I received my replacement 629-9 on Friday the 11th, two weeks after the return of the first one. This one was perfect with nicely figured wood. It worked as expected at the range. The only slight issue I had was a thin layer of sludgy black substance sticking on all the internals, to include the rifling, that I removed prior to the first range session. It took quite a bit of scrubbing to get that stuff out of the grooves whatever it was. Polishing compound maybe?

I bought one of the 629 Mountain Guns. The gun is fine except the coating on the trigger has some chips. S&W won't send me a new trigger, but they'll replace it if I send the gun to them. I'm not sure if it's worth sending it in. It might get lost or come back in worse shape than it's in now. And, I've heard that the wait is long. That coated trigger seems like a bad idea.....
