Collecting/accumulating… doubling up? Tripling up?

The primary focus of my collecting has always been diversity, with a focus on revolvers. I've always deliberately sought our new specimens with features that didn't exactly match any other guns I had. By virtue of this alone, I've never had any 2 that were exact duplicates of others in my collection. However, if an opportunity arose to purchase one at an extraordinarily good price, or a well-used shooter-grade gun, to save wear on a cleaner version of itself, I would certainly give it due consideration.

I bought a few Model 10's back when there were display cases of them for $125 a piece. (The 4" Model 13 was $150),I've since sold all but one, a Mounted Unit with jeweled action and lanyard.
I have a 'j' frame .38 and a 4" or 5" barrel .22LR revolver for every family member, not always the same maker for the .22's
Back when Walther P-1's (aluminum P-38's) were a bargain I thought about getting one for every family member, but I couldn't reconcile with the poor accuracy.
I have two Glock 20's ( Gen. 3, Gen. 4) [my wet weather woods gun]
I have two Colt LW Commanders ( one used {$600} that had been to Wilson for a complete treatment, it's the only gun I own that have to say is handsome) , and an all steel Remington Carry Commander
I have two 10mm 1911's

I have some 19-3, two of which are 4” blue. Same exact thing.
Also doubling up on a 29-2 blue in 6.5… and will be several others…
I’ve learned this is certainly a thing with folks.
How many of you have doubled up even tripled or more and have several of exactly the same model, barrel length, finish and variant?
How many carbon copies does one need to be “done”?
I’m eyeing up a 25-5, a couple of 27-2 and several 29-2s.. carbon copies of what I already have, but am drawn to wanting more… especially they look:
1) Nicer than the what I have
2) Like a great deal
3) Like a real beater that is way cheaper but has some worn character that you can shoot without worrying about the finish.
I have come to the conclusion, that at least for the foreseeable future, there is no end to accumulation/collecting, whether you already have what you want or not.
And there is no telling yourself not to want something. If you want it, you want it..
I need to take a lesson in patience again as an adult.
With me it's actually a bit of a different question-what do I NOT have multiples of across all makers in my collection?! So for example (17) versions of K-22/Mod 17s, (5) versions of K-38/Mod 14s, (21) versions of 1911, (10) different Winchester 94-22s and the lists go on! I def subscribe to the theory if I see it and I like it and I know it's a good deal and I could turn around and make $$ if I sold it tomorrow I'll buy it! Problem is in 45 years of collecting I never sell anything I only acquire!

if the price is right I don’t pass up the opportunity. Doesn’t matter if I already have one or two. I have multiple 617s, 625s, 16s, and 28s currently.
3" 65 &66s
3913 NLs
3914s
Beretta 92 Centurions, and Compacts and single stack Ms

4" 19 & 66s
4"685 & 586

And some others including some CZ rifles........................ 452 rimfires and 527s in 5.56/ .223
.

Guns I use and carry and others that were two cheap to leave behind

Only pair of identical S&Ws I recall owning are 645s. Lucked into a bunch of magazines for these years ago when I “only” owned one 645 and a 745. So it just made sense to buy another fairly priced 645 it came up, since I already had plenty of mags you know. Own quite a few other brand multiples, just seems to happen that they find me. ; )

M&P 1.0's. Got several when they were in the low 200.00's.
GunBroker had a security company peddling off their guns
(mostly 40 S&W). Then bought 9mm barrels for cheap from
Midwest Gun Works along with magazines. They're a lot of fun.

And lots of 1911's. They , for me, are like Lays Potato chips.
I couldn't stop at just one.

This constitutes a couple of spairs i think

Posted these before. Twin 1954 357 Magnums. Just counted my Pre-29's. Four 6 1/2" and two 4". Go for it Model29-26.5View attachment 754185
This is spot on.
I don’t have a pre-29 yet but it’s coming…next year or two.
I need go without purchasing for a while and save for a bit.
but I need that 4” nickel 25-5. And the 8”…. at the right price, of course.

It's an addiction, but perfectly legal unless your wife doesn't get it. Then the fun begins. 😁😁😁

I had two 3" 65 Lady Smiths. Bought one from here, and a week or so later found one local. Ended up trading one for a 696, then sold it for $1,300 and bought a 3" 66.

Well, I have been known to double up. More on caliber than on model. I am down to 2 M15's, and 4 M28's. I also have 2 Colt Govt 45's. Everything else is single. I do believe that I am going to let go of a lot of my duplicates and multiples in caliber sometime in the near future.

You should see the milsurp rifle collectors. I swear that some of them have a nice example for show and a so-so piece as a shooter for each year of production. But unless you can see the detail, it can look like an arsenal of identical guns.

I do appreciate a nice pair. I've handled a few in my time....but I digress.

Most of my duplicates are gone but I've had 4 and 6" 28 pairs, 4 and 6" 29 pairs, a nice brace of 5" 629 Classics, a brace of Detective Specials, and a brace of 2 1/2 inch 19-5s. There are many regrets running through my mind as I type this.

Well..
I finally had to double up on a 27-2 6” Blue.
The one I already have has a few dings, worn areas and scratches.
Just won another bid..
Big difference.
I paid a little over the odds, but not too much. A little layaway makes it easier.

While they're not collectibles and thus maybe not appropriate for this thread, I liked my (original version) CSX enough that I picked up a second one from a friend who didn't love his - one is carried locally and the other is a roadie that goes on trips in checked luggage.

I’ve got multiples of the 640, 10-5, 64ND, 64-2, 65-5LS, 28-2, SP-101, GP-100 and Colt MKIV/70 repros. I’ve got a bunch of KelTec P-32’s also. There are some guns I just really like, and some times I find deals on them that I can’t pass up. I’m trying to keep it to no more than three identical examples of any one gun.
