I’m getting reading to change out my OEM grips on my 586L Comp. Any special instructions/advise/tools required to accomplish this, what appears to be, an uncomplicated task?

Is easy to do - just remove the grip screw and then pull the panels off the grip frame.
My recommendations:
1) Use a screwdriver that fits the grip screw properly so you don't mar the screw.
2) If you can't easily pull the panels off, pry one off gently from the bottom with something thin that is plastic, not metal. Use a thin guitar pick, a thin plastic scraper, or something else soft that won't mar the wood. Once one panel is off you can easily tap the other panel off from the back using your finger.
3) When attaching the new grips, just make the grip screw snug. Don't overtighten or muscle it down hard. You could crack your grips or strip the screw.

Enjoy that very nice revolver of yours, and post a pic of it with the new grips!

Loosen the grip screw but don't take it out. With steady pressure, push the screwdriver into the screw while making sure the other side of the revolver isn't resting on anything. That will free the opposite side grip, remove it, then push the other grip off from behind. No need to do any prying.

Or . . . 'gently' tap the handle of the screwdriver with the head set in the slot of the screw using a small hammer or mallet.

It's been a long time but I think my L comp came with wood and a rubber monogrip. I swapped them out for a set of Spegel's in walnut.

New Developments

Removing the Altamont OEM grips were not a problem, but the new Roper Target replacements from Altamont wont fit. Fit great on the back strap side but a pretty big gap on the front/trigger side. I’ll get with Altamont techs this morning.

Anyone else having this kind of fit issues with Altamont replacement grips?

Altamont Roper Target

I recently put some new rosewood Roper Target on my 66-8 and they were a perfect fit replacing the original rubber grips. Very classic look while still absorbing magnum recoil.

Here’s how my 586L COMP turned out with the Altamont grip change out. I welcome comments
