I opened a Federal 550 round Value Pack and got a surprise. About half of the rounds are Remington Golden Bullets and the rest appear to be Federal. I have no idea as to how long I have had the box, but the sticker says I paid $9.00 for it.

I'm guessing the box had been opened before........... Remington & Federal were never associated until after the Remington bankruptcy when the ammo line was sold off to the company that owns Federal ammunition. By that time the 550 value packs were closer to $40 than $9. Some shooters will reuse a box, mixing brands or even different loads in it. The only other way I could account for such a mix would be spilled ammo from broken boxes that a store repacked to sell.

I personally opened the box and I don't ever remember buying Golden Bullets.
That would make me suspect whoever you got it from. Two companies that had no connection with each other until very recently wouldn't be likely to be found sharing a bulk ammo box that's old enough to have a $9 price tag. After 20+ years in the gun business I have encountered more than a few cases of people putting things in a box other than the original one. I have encountered mixed brands or loadings of ammo in one box. Most often at gun shows though I've had some come into the shop that way as well.

Also, what head stamp is on the Golden Bullets? REM or just U?

Was the box NIB when you purchased it? If from a small shop the shop owner may have done it, or it was bought by him in an estate sale/trade. No real good answer since there is no reason remington and Federals would be mixed together. Something like that would be for the Grandkids to shoot up/waste.

After a great deal of thought and research, I have determined I was the cause of the mixup. I carry my .22 ammo in a Crown Royal bag which I keep in my range box. I rechecked the Federal box and there are only Federal cartridges in there. There must have been some Remington ammo in my bag and I then added some Federal.

I apologize for my mistake.

It happens to all, sooner or later.
