I have a 1969 Chief's Special, a Model 36, and it got me to wondering: if a person bought a Chief's Special back when that gun was new in 1969, and they wanted to change the grips, what grip options would that person have? I don't think Hogue rubber grips existed yet, did they? VZ definitely didn't. What about Pachmayr Compac? Did anyone in 1969 use those?

No Hogue Monogrips at that time but Guy Hogue was making grips and would soon retire from LAPD and start making grips full-time. These were probably made early to mid 1970's but are about as perfect a grip for for a round butt model 36 in my hand. Not sure how many rubber grips were available in 1969 but they would shortly take over the revolver grip world.

I have my father's Model 36 that was made in '69 or '70. He carried it as a plainclothes police officer for 16 years. He didn't like the small factory grips, so he bought a set of Herrett's Shooting Ace grips. They're still on it, and they are a very comfortable grip.
