Crazy! Can you show some pictures?Stamped as model 58, letter from s&w says model 57 has target sites grips and it come in a wood box like the the 57, but know ejected rod shroud
Welcome to Molle Brushless Shaving Cream Mystery Theater. Something tells me we won't be hearing back soon. Now a word from our sponsors...Need pix to help out identifying the gun. A mis-stamped frame is slightly unusual but doesn't add any value. A picture of the factory letter second page will help too.
So, from what you're telling us, you have a M57 but it is stamped as a M58? They are both .41 Magnum, the M58 was intended as a law enforcement carry piece. Only came in 4" barrel length and like you mention does not have an extractor shroud and has fixed sights. The M57 came in 4", 6" and 8-3/8" barrels and all versions have adjustable rear sight, and extractor shroud. M57 also came with large Target stocks, the M58 came with PC magna stocks.Stamped as model 58, letter from s&w says model 57 has target sites grips and it come in a wood box like the the 57, but know ejected rod shroud
This should hold you over, shipped in 1967 to Williams Gun Sight. The only mystery here is the custom grips are from an unknown maker.I'm a 41 mag geek. Need pics or more info.
I found mine ANIB and unfired beyond the factory. A gentleman on this forum had it, wanted to sell it but only within his state so he didn't have to worry about paperwork and shipping to an FFL out in BFE. I lived about 4-1/2 hours from him in the same state and drove to his house after a great phone conversation. He was in his 80's had been a state trooper, a city LEO and had done drug interdiction in the Coast Guard. The M58 he inherited from his LEO partner, who had purchased the gun new. It sat in two different safes for 52 years before I got it. It's no longer unfired but still in primo condition. It's surprisingly difficult to find "S" serial number Model 58's in great shape. Many were duty guns and carried daily.
That was a great pick up and a well worth it drive. I love drives like that, where you're excited with anticipation on the way up and relaxed and fulfilled on the way back. I would have done the same thing.I found mine ANIB and unfired beyond the factory. As a humorous post script, his partner's last name was Smith, and no joke, his last name was Wesson.

Mine shipped August 22, 1968. I felt very lucky to have found it, and it's the oldest S&W I own, the M57 is just slightly newer but still an S prefix. That was a great pick up and a well worth it drive. Your serial number is very low. Mine is S 296,XXX and shipped in 1967. If I can find one like this, I would be all over it.
