To cut or not to cut that is the question

Well I made a decision the gun is with Ken Kelly and he's cutting it down to 8-3/8" and no front sight, drilling and tapping the frame recutting the forcing cone and installing a crane detent. My other 10-5/8" came in yesterday have to pick up today and check all the specs it only has about 50 rounds thru it so it's cherry.
Hope it goes well and it turns out to be a good shooter.

MidwayUSA has new, unfluted 629 cylinders for $112. It will work with some degree of fitting, etc., but nothing that a good 'smith can't handle. The biggest caution is that it may require setting the barrel back a thread if you are wanting a tiny cylinder gap. Usually they run average to upper acceptable limit.
The new ones also have the "modern" throat diameter, which is good if you shoot cast bullets.

I very much like my 10 5/8" 29s! I shoot them, Standing, IHMSA style, on both the short Field Pistol and the long BIg Bore courses. (100 yds max. vs. 200m.) I'm 62 and don't find them muzzle heavy or unwieldy. Great iron sight deer gun for deer with a little paint dot or three on the sights. But I limit deer distance to generally under 75 yards to ensure good hits in the vitals. "Easy", when you're used to smaller targets, further!

Thanks I found one that is 1.70 but mine is 1.73 I'll ask Midway if they can measure a couple for me otherwise I'll call S&W and see what they have. This gun has a pretty decent .006 gap and I don't want to make that any bigger.
Thanks !

I slugged the gun today here's the results. I measured some XTP'S I have they are 427.5 so they won't shoot I presume. Have to check my molds and sizer dies thinking a .432 diameter should work but not sure if I'll have to polish the throats or are they close enough.

The one 10-5/8" is currently with Ken Kelly doing some modifications for me he thinks he has some unfluted cylinders available so I'll just add that to the list of mods he is gonna do for me will update ASAP.

sorry to see a sillouette get chopped up, especially with only 150 rounds down the tube. I wouldnt cut it down or magna port it. Ive been looking for one is excellent condition for a couple years and havent found one yet that met my requirements. I guess if its got family connections and you would never sell it anyways, you should do what you want with it.

Well I have two so the other one is staying full length I tried finding a 8-3/8" barrel but no luck this will make a nice usable hunting rig for my buddies Daughter when I will it back to her. It's getting drilled and tapped and no front sight, cleaning up the forcing cone if it needs it, hopefully a new non fluted cylinder, target crown, and tightened up if needed I already installed a new cylinder latch so it locks up tighter at least by .002 thou
