I have been wanting to try a certain Nill grips for the longest time, but they just don't pop up. Anything designed my Phillip Hemphill was my direction.

Finally saw one on the classifieds and took a chance on them fitting my hands. I was hoping for XL but they were standard size.

They are definitely shapely and much thicker than my go to old school Bill Davis large grip.

I have two 686s...

my former issued duty revolver ABS4xxx used from 89-93. We could only use Target wood for grips as seen in the image.
I also bought a heavily used dept 686 ACL1xxx and had it tuned by Bob Jones in the 2010s. I mainly use this revolver for LEO competition.

I wanted to compare the Bill Davis grips to the Nills, so I mounted the Nills onto my duty revolver. They went on very snug and later had hell taking them off. Definitely tight tolerance on the fit.

The Nills will live on the competition 686, however they will not go on. They are on the ragged edge of installing, but I did not want to break the wood or tweak the holes in the grip.

it should be known that when the 686 was my duty gun, we had competitions on who had the shiniest 686. On my days off, I would sit in the living watching TV with a rag, Filtz and 686 in my hand. Its possible I polished those rounds on the grip frame and that's why the Nills went on this 686.

I am thinking about dressing (more like polishing) the two rounds and ever so slightly chamfer the outer edge to aid in installation. see image of the inner grip frame, referring to them as the rounds.

I am thinking.... using round stones and polishing wheel with a polishing compound to address roughness as seen in the image.

any other ideas to ease install, maintain a snug fit but will come off without the aid of pry bars? (HA!)

TIA

I put nill grips on my N frame. Amazing quality grips but I have small hands and JB grips work much better for me especially with open backstrap

I got them on dressing the roughness on the frame (grip round area). It's obvious the side plate side grip frame round is tighter.

My concern is when I put them on, they might not come off with ease. I need to install new side plate screws.

Once I get it together, I will snap some pics.

I put Nills on all my revolvers; K, L, N and Manurhin. They all fit tightly but never had a set that wouldn't go on. Getting them off later can be troublesome though. I'll use an Exacto knife to spread the bottom seam then slowly pry them apart.
