I got this Masterpiece 14 about 10 years ago and suspect that it has been reblued. What are the telltale signs that it has been? TIA.

I will get some close ups later this evening. I suspect that it has been reblued ‘cause it’s just too dern purdy. Plus it looks a bit thick if that makes any sense. Be back later.

Clear close up pictures of the markings and side plate seam are the best indicators. S&W finishing did vary over the years so some may be deeper blue than others

So perhaps I was suspicious for no reason it seems. It’s just that the blue seemed too deep, especially the cylinder. Thanks guys!

O.P. From the appearance of the sideplate seam and screws that gun has not been re-finished. Even a factory re-finish will show very slight rounding of the sideplate seam and the area around the sideplate screws, and the photo shows they are absolutely sharp!

What I look for in a Smith that I suspect has had a reblue is #1 the front of the extractor Where you push to extract empties should be in the white. rebluers seldom clean the blue off of it. 2nd is the base of the pin usually covered by target or magna grips but can be seen with service grips is buffed flat during prep for a reblue.

It looks legit to me. If it was refinished, someone must have paid an insane amount of money to have it done perfectly and I think it is unlikely someone would spend that kind of money on a pretty common S&W revolver.

As stated prior, I also believe it to be an original finish. The old time S&W blueing was superb and can’t be replicated. Unless you have deep pockets. 2 buddies had Trunbull reblue a few guns. They are works of art but was expensive.

I think a re-blue.
The S&W logo/medallion is blurred from buffing.
The grit lines on the side plate don't go in any direction that would indicate a factory polish with the plate installed on the frame. From 1 oclock sweeping down to 7 oclock.
Plus there are heavier grit polish lines all over the gun in spots that were never removed when the polisher moved to a finer grit. Maybe even faint file lines in the metal here and there (right underneath the front side plate screw on the plate itself for one).

Look at the pic of the RH recoil shield. Click on it and then click on the pic itself again to really enlarge it.
Looks like file marks running down the back side of the shield then heavy buffed over for a shine.
The edges of the frame right along side the hammer have some either coarse grit marks under the shine or other coarse metal prep marks.

The cylinder recoil lug on the LH side of the frame (pic) is all rounded over and misshapen from it's normal crisp flat surface and sharp clean contour cuts from the factory.
It's a small part that is not installed in the frame during polishing. That so the it's not in the way of polishing that area of the frame.
When finished polishing, the clean, finished lug is placed in position and rivited in.

Lots of soft edges, not real bad, but soft. Not the sharp edges expected.

It's just what I see
