My first S&W was an early 1950s Chiefs Special. This was about 1959, so I can only give a description. It had the serrated ramp front sight, flat latch, and the hammer had the earlier fine checkering/knurling on the spur. Does anyone know what year the hammer changed to the later coarse checkering? I know the gun was between ca. 1952 and 1957 because of the described features. Unfortunately I got rid of it quite soon as it developed a severe push-off condition! It was a 3" and I wish I still had it! I have no idea what the SN was. I don't believe it was a "Baby Chief".

Wart Hogs "Baby Chief" post: https://smith-wessonforum.com/threads/a-couple-of-questions-about-a-baby-chiefs-special.744449/ Has the fine checkering on the hammer, just like mine did, so maybe it was a "Baby"!

Jack, or two bit cowboy, can you help?

Dr. Jinks said, Engineering Change #463, December 23, 1955, calls for the "shape (side profile) of the [Chiefs' hammer] spur" to be "the same shape as IT22 [1953 .22/32 Kit Gun]."

Chiefs Special Airweight serial number 77850 has the last known small hammer, and it shipped in May 1956.

So it must have been between 1952 to 1966. Thanks!
