I have been shooting the 38 Hornady HBWC 148gr with my 686P. I was looking for a cheeper bullet for plinking and come across the Precision Delta HBWC looks to be about the same? Anyone have any input about this bullets.(accuracy, easy loading, messy,)that kind of stuff.
or if you have a favorite HBWC that you would like to share please do.

Thanks,John

Purchase the ML (match lube) 148gr HBWC from Precision Delta, they fly just as well as Hornady and Remingtons, but no mess at all.........

I like remmy's .358" but I found out you have to flare open just a tad more and get it square on top to minimize shaving or deformation.

I would like to find them cheaper in the area of shipping. I buy them from Midway, but get dorked on shipping when they can be thrown in a 10$ flat rate USPS mailer.

I know what your talking about there. I have been buying my Hornadys there. Part of the reason i been shopping around and for alternatives.

1000 of .358" Remmys through Midway $68 shipping $14.82 plus other fees and backordered until Sept 2010 (I just cancelled my order)

1000 of .357" ML Precision Delta is $70 shipped if I read correctly

I wonder if .001" really makes a difference?

the Precision Delta's seem like a much better deal and are in stock.

If you're going to get the PD bullets use the match lube ( Rooster Jacket ) . Non match lube are gummy , not as messy as the Rem " blackies " . The Zero 148 HBWC's are also very good & like the PD's quite reasonable . They also ship in a flat rate box . Slug your bore & check your cylinder throats . That'll verify what diameter bullet to use . Usually in a S&W revolver I stick with .358 . Colt & S&W52 you can go with .357 . Not usually a problem with a HBWC . They're soft & usually expand to fill the bore .

Thats good to know about the non match PD bullets being gummy.A friend of mine had also told me about the zero bullets. he seams to like them?

if you get a line on zero HBWC, and they are cheaper than Precision Delta...let me know.

I want to order next week for a match in Aug.

thanks in advance

Have you used the zero bullets? if so do you like? I just looked at them on there web page didnt really search for low price was unsure of quality. But if i is them somewhere for good price i'll post it.

never tried zero and basing this on boatbum's info below.

I have a shooting buddy (70 year old meaner that dirt vietnam veteran F4 Phantom Pilot) who probably buys Precision Delta ammo in excess of 10g a year.

He must have a bat line to the location as if the website says out, he can get it.

he tells me to buy PD, but I dont have that kind of funds. so I have to reload and duplicate factory ammo (for practice) and just get enough boxes for a match if that particular match requires factory ammo.

if not....its reloads for me.

I may try PD.

I understand and know where your coming from. I was leaning towards the PD unless more people come forward that have used the zeros with good results. I only know one person and hate to get stuck with a few hundred and find out i dont like them as much as he did.

I've shot Zero , PD , Rem & Star 148 HBWC's . I'm a Bullseye shooter so if it don't group @ 50yds I don't use it period . The only difference between them is lube & consistentancy of diameter . The Rem's are messy , but are consistent & they shoot . Star's no longer made . Some PD's I've got ( in the past before current match lube & their 45 185 SWCHP's ) were undersized & did not group @ 50yds . With Hemphill's records I guess I got a bad lot or 2 . The Zero's have been all I could ask for . One of the owners is a serious ( HM ) Bullseye shooter . I see on their website they're 4-6 weeks behind . Powder Valley stocks them but it's been awhile since I bought bullets from them & don't know about shipping costs . Can't beat them for powder & primers . Loads I've used with great sucess are : 3.1-3.2 W231 , 2.5-2.7 WST , 2.8 BE ,2.8-2.9 VVN320 , 3.6 VVN340 & 2.9-3.0 AA#2 .My S&W 52-2 & Colt OMM prefer W231 , but any of the above should provide acceptible results w/ a 148 HBWC . Hope this helps .

I'm a BE guy too, and can pretty much echo boatbum101's post above.

In general, out of my variious K38's, the late, lamented Star HBWCs shoot the best, followed (in no particular order) by the current production Remington, Pre Delta (ML) and Zero bullets. The Remingtons are oversize (and require a bit of special loading technique) and messy to handle, but don't lead and are very consistent. The Pre Delta ML are the easiest to handle and shoot as well as the Remmies and the Zeros, but are by far the least messy to handle. The Zeros shoot good, but only come lubed with the black sticky lube, and are a bit more expensive than the other two.

I currently have about 14,000 Star Special Match on hand, but save them for special occasions. Money being not much of an object to my bullet-buying, I mostly shoot the Pre Delta ML bullets these days.

I agree 100%. I used a Dillon 550, and loading these remmys are slow.

In order for them to seat properly for me this what I have to do

open the mouth up more (which puts more stress on the case)
square the slug on the case (or it will start crooked and the larger OD slug will deform)
after squaring, slightly push down to ensure they start square to minimize shaving or deforming

they shoot good, but I think I will try the PD ML .357" slugs. I will order on monday!

thanks
