So what is your favorite brand of HBWC's? Does anyone here cast there own?

National Bullet Company of Eastlake, Ohio. Picked them up in an estate sale a couple of years ago. Down to my last 500. I do not believe the company is in business anymore, sure wish they were!

I had some Nationals years ago they were nice wadcutters. I have about 4000 old Star 148 HBWC I got cheap from a guy that retired from competition years back. The black graphite type lube is old and peeling off, they need to be washed in gasoline and lubed. I'll tumble lube them with 45-45-10 which I think is a better lube if done light and right.
I don't use these HBWC much at all in revolvers, I like cast H&G 50 wadcutters better. The Stars are better for model 52 or a 38 special 1911 and seated flush for reliable functioning.

I've been having good performance out of the Bayou Bullets 138 gn. DE wadcutters. They're polymer coated, non smoky, and clean to reload. I'm getting about 1-1/2" groups at 50 yd. with the gun in a Ransom rest. I'm running them at about 910 - 920 fps. At that velocity, the wind doesn't have much effect on them, if less than gale force.

I might be tempted to bore such a mold. Though I am of mixed opinion of the wadcutter design.
While I might see some defensive merit as a short range crusher, I also keep a mind toward the utility favored by the outdoorsman.
What these things can do at high velocities is quite appealing, but they tumble when supersonic, reducing their worth afield.

Havent used his 38cal HBWC but Matts Bullets sells some. I have recently, like yesterday, loaded and shot his 215gr 44cal HBWC, shot great. Accurate.

I started with tumble lubing and now only tl two bullets. One is a Lee dewc that is done strictly for speed purposes. These are not sized either, just fun plinkers. The other is a 90 gr 32 cal swc. TL can work but it doesn't work well on high pressure cartridges, ie 9 mm and 40 for me.

For some reason I got mental block on DEWCs. My favorite WC has been the Lyman/ ideal button nose. I have DEWC molds in 38 44 & 45, all Lyman 2 holers. The button nose have been extremely accurate in k38 & m25-5s. Looking right now for WC to load in 45AR brass for 25-2s.
The first HBWCs I shot were Hornady 38s. I use to shot them out of 4” Python / Red Dot, dirtiest load known to man but tack drivers. I just recently got box of Hornady, my Bro picked up at Cabelas. His favorite 38 slug for K38 & 52. I’ve shot a good many HBWC and never had skirt separate. I did have some 32 Peters WCs than due to age or storage, had one not clear the bore. I was lucky and realized not bullet strike and weird report.
Every time I read about somebody bulging barrel it makes you think twice about HBWCs. Really you never know the whole story.
HBWC are not made to hot rod or load backwards. The store bought Hornady HBWCs are swaged from soft lead. When you cast your own they will be harder and you can make them as hard as you want.
* How does a DEWC know whether it’s coming or going?

I've never loaded HBWC. I've used the H&G #50 WC flat base design for many years, usually in revolvers, but also in one Model 52. Does the HB shoot that much more accurately than a FB wadcutter?

I have had good accuracy with the old Speer HBwc design but as
mentioned they are hard to find.
I also keep the soft lead under 800fps, if possible.

I have to now shoot the BBwc designs from several companies but
they have yet to be as accurate in my revolvers, mostly my M49 snub nose.

These days I load Berry's backwards in 357 cases with a stiff load of Unique for my 2 1/2" 66 carry gun. A few years ago I shot this load into water jugs and found at 21 feet the bullets stayed intact and opened in a trumpet shape to over 1/2". The berry's shot clean with no fouling at all. I believe there are strength limitations on short barreled K frame revolvers that preclude a lot of muzzle velocity so this load combination seems to be a reasonable compromise for self-defense. My personal preferred choice for a carry gun is a 57 4" 41 magnum but it's heavy, and bulky and sometimes not the best choice. I do believe 357 is really not enough gun.
