Wolf primers?

I bought them when nothing else was available and found them totally satisfactory. In fact I now use them in Large Pistol as well as Magnum (Large & Small Pistol) as well as Small Rifle Magnum for my 5.56. They are a bit harder than Federal but not as hard as CCI. I also ran a series of chronograph tests on a .45ACP load that had been developed with Winchester Large Pistol primers. I substituted Wolf LP Magnums and got very similar results.

I hope that helps,

Frank

They go bang every time. Been using them since the primer shortage of 2009. Just ordered 2 more cases. Smith Crazy and others have all been using them. I use the Large ones also. I think as far as seating they are between Winchester and CCI.

Been several other threads on them. They are now selling Tula primers which are believed to be the same just different name and package.

Great primers! Saw them for $20/1000 at the gun show in Chantilly this afternoon. Had every flavor except small pistol.

No first-hand experience, but a couple of pretty serious rifle shooters in the club have used them this year, and are entirely satisfied with them. And these are guys who are unhappy with anything outside of 1/4 MOA. I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I love the things! :D OK, OK, strongly LIKE them, how is that? :D

At any rate, they have worked all but one time out of the thousands I have loaded. Don't remember the size it was but, just one that didn't go bang.

Back in January of '08, I felt the need to start buying bullet components that I wasn't willing to try to make, primers were one of those things. Not clairvoyant, just reading the handwriting on the wall, so I started to stock up.

I was working lots of overtime and bought my first bunch of primers over the Internet then, they were Wolf's. I have been using them ever since then. At a gun show about the same time a fellow had Federals for about the same price, I bought 5000 large and 5000 small primers. They are still on the shelf while I have gone through most all of those Wolf I first purchased. Totally satisfied.

Recently, I bought some more as they were on sale. I will end up giving some of them to relatives that are reloading. I also just bought 10,000 Wolf large pistol primers from Wideners with a shooting buddy so we halved the hazmat fee. Brought the price of the primers to $20/1000. Not bad in today's world!

Buy a bunch and use them with confidence. The only thing I do have to mention about them, if you are using a powder that requires magnum primers, use Wolf magnum primers. You will get better results! :)

I've only used the Wolf SP and they go bang every time. They are a little harder to seat than CCI or Winchester but that is the only difference I have noticed.

They are an excellent primer. I have loaded small pistol, large pistol, small rifle magnum, small pistol magnum, and large rifle. I have loaded and shot untold thousands of them with only a couple of misfires. As far as I am concerned, you can't beat them. I usually order them from Powder Valley or Widners.

Initially I had some trouble with them, but that was my fault. They were not seating properly in my press, made a simple adjustment and all is well. I have been using Winchester primers for years, got a deal on some Wolf primers and decided to try them, other than the fact that they are harder to seat they work great.

Stay away from large pistol magnum. Very bad with ball powders. I've tested them.

For what it is worth, I did a side by side comparison of Winchester LP and Wolf LPM primers using W-231 under a 200 gr LCSWC. In loads from 5.2 through 5.7 gr the magnum primers delivered greater velocity as well as a larger spread and SD. The velocity increase was around 2% while the SD was almost 50% greater with the magnum. When I increased the charge to 5.8 gr, the velocity was 6.5 fps slower with the magnum and the SD was less than 10% greater (11 vs. 9). All in all, I determined that the Wolf LPM was a suitable substitute for the Winchester LP with W-231 ball powder. I would be interested in knowing what I missed.

PS: Excuse any typo's as my vision is only about 50% now.

Frank,
Get better bud!

As to the Winchester/Wolf comparison, I am with you on this one.

I did the same kind of testing, only with large quantities of H110/W296, AA#9 and a MILSURP powder called WC820, and found that the Wolf Magnum Large Pistol primers gave me the exact same performance as the Winchesters did.

What I did next was to test them against Federal Large Pistol primers. The magnum primers, Wolf, gave about 100fps over the Federal standard primers in single action. It was noticeably worse in double action. Oh, the Federals will light every time in a tuned action, just when they go off, they don't give too hot of fire either! ;)
