I've got a ton of Clays around the house. Hodgdon lists loads for cast 240gr bullets. Anyone run these? Would like a decent plinking load.

Have not tried it yet but Clays makes great 38 Special 158 gr lead bullet loads so I would suspect that if you are looking for 850 - 950 fps loads it would probably work somewhere between OK and Great.

Not in 44 but when I was into cowboy action shoots I loaded it in 45lc. I think it was in the 5.2 gr range. Good light load. Shot POA out to about 20yds in ruger vaquero. Used it in 38 as well. My uncle shot it in his 44mags with equal results. Never had any problems with it. Used under a 240 gr in 44 and 250 gr in 45.

Clays is fine for 44 Mag loads just don't go over the listed max load which is quite mild.

Clays reaches a certain point then pressure spikes in a hurry. A quite volatile powder in my opinion.

Keep it at a low pressure and it performs beautifully.

Add to it the small charge wt, wouldn't be my first choice for plinkers. I would stick to Unique, good loft, very forgiving at the top end. Clays is just too spookie for me. I actually prefer TrailBoss for light lead loads, fills the case nicely, but does cost more to use.

Yep, I use it for 44mag plinkers. I like it because the large funky green flakes are easy to spot in the case - unlike TiteGroup.

Some load data

I load Clays for my Cowboy .44 Magnum 205 grain RNFP with 6.0 grains of Clays and a Winchester WLP. Max load for 200 grain RNFP is 6.4 grains.

last weekend, I had tried out some 44 Mag. 200 gr. LRNFP with 4.4 grs. Clays in a Marlin 20" barrel and shot 100 plus rounds at steel targets and found to be light recoil in the rifle. I was trying to compare the same with 6.5 grs. Unique and both loads were good enough for Cowboy Action targets at 20 to 25 yrds. and 50 yrds steel targets were also shot with no trouble.

My standard 44-40 load is 4.4 clays under a 200-206 LRNFN for cowboy action shooting, a very light load. I hope this is of some help. Ivan
